Decided to hunt Ft Hood this year. I have hunted there off and on in years past and always managed to get irritated over all the red tape. It is cheap and close though, so it's worth the BS.
I was running out of light when four bucks came into my area at the same time. One was an ugly three point that was legal to shoot and needs to be shot, although he's likely already bred some does this year. Two were smaller four points, not legal. This deer I shot came in last. I couldn't tell much about him in the fading light, other than he was big bodied and his horns were easily wide enough to make him legal. I hit him right behind the shoulder and he went maybe twenty feet. Ft Hood is shotgun with slugs and archery only, except in their guided areas. I used an H&R Ultra Light slughunter, 20 ga. with a Leupold VXR 2-7X33 #4 reticle. The bullet was a Remington Accutip sabot slug. Plenty of knockdown power for whitetails and the 20 ga. gives you more range than a 12 does. He's a seven point, broken eye guard, 16.5 inches inside to inside. Field dressed at 115 lbs. I've seen lots of turkeys too. No Toms yet though. |

Good deal, Tejas!
I was all set to go archery hunt at Ft. Hood once. The year was 2001. Had contacted them in late August of that year and had made plans to go visit and scout out an area to hunt. Then, a couple weeks later, 9/11 happened and put an end to those plans as all military bases went on lock-down. I've heard there's a lot of deer within Ft. Hood property. |

Very nice. I have looked at that H&R versus repeating slug guns. I think for the price and the reported accuracy, it is the way to go.

Mine will shoot about 3 inch groups at 100 yds., but only with the ammo mentioned above. In my limited experience, I have found that rifled slug guns are picky about what ammo you choose. I tried four or five different slugs before I started using these. They also need to be cleaned frequently as your testing ammo since the plastic sabot leaves shavings in your rifling. I reload my own rifle and pistol ammo so it was pretty annoying to see how expensive these shotgun slugs were. Browning and Savage both make bolt action slug guns. If you don't mind spending the money, might be a better choice.

I have heard there are some deer in there.
I personally have not had the opportunity to go scout any of it, much less go hunt there, but hard to beat something like that on free property to hunt. Congrats on your harvest Tejas.

I wish I could go hunting out at the Ft. Harrison VA or National Guard sections. Scads of mulies, most of them pretty large. They're totally indifferent to automatic weapons fire...probably the safest deer herd in Montana around the most expended ammo.
