I have recently aquired a Howa 308 varmiter with the 20" heavy barrel and need some help with a base and rings.  This rifle will be used for paper punching and serve as a back-up for my 7mm-08 during hunting season.  I would like to top it off with the SS 3-9x40 in the future when the funds are available, but for now it will wear a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42.  I would like a one-piece base and was thinking of the EGW bases.  Will I need the 0 moa base or the 20 moa base if my max range will be 500 yards?  Also, will the SS rings in low be adequate for both the Monarch and the SS?

After looking at the EGW bases, they are way to high and would propably be an issue with cheek weld.  Chris told me I needed medium SS rings, which base would work best with the SS rings.

Medium really?  With a 42mm objective.  I would think lows would work just fine.

For only shooting to 500 yards you will not need a slanted base.  In that case I would look at the Talley one piece ring mounts.  http://swfa.com/Talley-Lightweight-Aluminum-30mm-Scopemount-P8379.aspx  Those are lows, and I had them one a Marlin rifle which has a flatter receiver/barrel than the Howa, with a 42mm scope and I had plenty of clearance.

The EGW rail is pretty high from what I can find on the web so low rings would work, but I am still concerned about the scope being to high above the centerline on the scope.  I do not have the SS 3-9 yet, still saving up money, so I am going to mount a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 first, that is one of the reasons I wanted to use the SS rings because they are 30mm with 1" inserts.  I may just purchase some low Talleys in 1" and when I get the SS scope, get the 30 mm rings.  It will be a while before I get the SS, I need to get rid of the Hogue stock first.

I have the 10x HD and have it in low IOR rings.  I have a 30 MOA seekins base on my rem 700 with a very large barrel and it cleared on my gun just fine with the lows.

Here is a pick of my buddies Rem 700 and SS 3-9x with SWFA low rings.   He has plenty of room, I am sure you will be just fine with the lows.

Thanks Supertool!

Do you think I would need an adjustable cheek piece similar to your buddies?

That depends upon the shooter.  For me I would say yes, I like to have a nice tight cheek weld on my guns if possible.  The lower the better.

His is a Karsten cheek piece by the way.  Karsten makes good ones.

Once again, thank you Supertool.  I am going to go with the EGW 0 moa rail, SS low rings, and get the Karsten cheek piece.  I read a review of it on Sniper Central and had pretty much decided on it.  Once I get the money saved up, I am going to look at a Manners Stock and have it inletted for a CDI DBM.
