I am wondering if consumers of binoculars, Pentax in this case, can tell if their binoculars are refurbished or factory fresh. I called the distributors in Denver who said that sometimes their binoculars are sealed in plastic and sometimes they are not. They said refurbished binoculars will have a sticker saying "class II" but the sticker can be put on the plastic sealing and if the sealing was taken off you would not be able to tell.
Also, in the case of the Pentax DCF SP they recently added a coating that repeals water, mud, etc and it is not marked on the box if the binocs have it. How can you tell if it is the more recent model? Again, Pentax said they could not tell as serial numbers are in batches.

As far as I know, there is no across-the-board way of positively identifying a refurbished binocular from a new binocular.  I don't know of any manufacturer that alters the serial # (by adding a digit perhaps) or otherwise marks the binoculars themselves to diferentiate them from new. I suppose it would be possible for a manufacturer to keep a list of the refurbished models' serial numbers. This however, would seem like an unduly complicated task with little to no obvious benefit so; I doubt they do it.

Some manufacturers will repackage binoculars into boxes that are labeled "refurbished" for re-sale but, unless the consumer keeps the packaging (and I don't know of many who do,) this information would be lost as soon as the box is opened and discarded.

Actually, i would prefer to buy refurbished binoculars.

Here is why:

They will cost less.

They will be inspected and checked several times before sale. It is more likely that you will get a "lemon" when purchasing a brand new unit, because they they are not  closely inspected by dealers, vendors, and US representatives.

They still come with warranty.

I do know that Nikon had been putting a little gold "indent" next to the serial number on several of their LX models after they had been factory refurbished.
