looking for a scope for my TC ICON .22-250.  I pland to shoot at varmits and paper out to about 500 or so yds.  Still reading lots of posts about brands zeiss, bushnell, sightron, leopold etc...  only looking to spend 500-600$ I can go a little more if I have to but don't really want to.  Do I need to go 20+ power or will 14 or so be pleanty for this range?  If I stay with less power I can get a little better scope for the same $.  I havent done a lot of long range stuff so I'm just looking for opinions from those that have.

Something with the top end of 14x to 16x will be sufficient.

On the other hand, if this will primarily be used at the range or to shoot at fairly stationary targets, there isn't a whole lot of downside to going with a higher magnification scope.

In your price range, I would suggest you give a close look to Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50:

On my 22-250, I currently have Sightron S2 Big Sky 6-24x42SIL:

I am very happy with it, but it is slightly above your price range, while Vortex is a bit over $100 less.

If fixed power will work for you this may be the way to go...

forgot to mention that I want varriable power to shoot close as well.  I also want target turrets too, I would rather range it and dial it than use dots or bdc etc...after some reading looking at sightron III, is this much better than the II big sky?    bushnell 4200 6-24x or 6500 4.5-30x  dont know if the 6500 is worth the extra or the conquest 4.5-14 save a few bucks here by not going 6.5-20. Looks like the $$ has gone up a little but better do it right the first time than be unhappy with a purchase.

I have a 5X20 Monarch on my .204 and it seldom gets cranked up past 10-12 power when varmint hunting but 20X is nice for shooting paper, 14X would work just fine as a top end.
I have an Icon in .308 they sure are nice accurate rifles. Best wishes.

thanks for all the input guys.  tough choices here, sometimes it seems like splitting hairs between some of these scopes.  After much thought I'm going with the Zeiss conquest 4.5-14x50MM with turrets.

That should work very well.  Over 14x mirage becomes a factor.  For varmints, I rarely go over 12x, most work is done in the 10x - 12x range.

weaver tactical 4.5-15 will just about fit in your price range, and in my opinion is a hell of a scope.
