I have a .308 rifle I plan on shooting stationary targets at 300 yards (the max distance of the range near my house).  I have been looking at scopes with top end magnification of 18-24X.  However, I have been thinking, do I really need that much magnification?  Would 15-16X top end magnification be sufficient, or am I better off with more magnification for target shooting.

I had a 17x that I shot at a 300 yard range, and it allowed me to see the .30 cal holes pretty easily.

The more magnifacation, the more you'll have to fight mirage on hot days.

Actually, 10x would be nice at those ranges, if you have a spotter setup.

Opinions vary on this subject, but for me, less is more.

The U.S. Army uses a fixed 10X Leupold Mark 4 M3 on the M24 sniper rifle ( I like mine).

The most sought after police sniper scope is Leupold 4.5-14 Mark 4 with M1 ( wish I had one).

The Leupold Mark 4   8.5 to 25 can still be used at 8.5 which is obviously less than 10X so whats wrong with buying one of these - nothing I love mine, (but these are expensive scopes).

The right choice for an under $400 budget is either SS10X42M or   LEU56860

Note of caution while having a 20X max on a variable can be usefull it can really be too much for a fixed power for most applications. (There are things I like about my SS20X and things I dont like -  I wish I had a SS10X )

Buy what you like - if you cant afford it yet save up and buy what you really want.

I think it  depends on what kind of accuracy you are looking for at these ranges.

If you want to shoot all three shots in one hole at 300 yards then you might want more power but if you only want to shoot a 3 inch group at 300 yards (1MOA)  then even a 8x would work.

I have a super sniper 16x and it works great for 100 yard shooting! I have not shot it much at 300 but I am sure it will work good for that as well

I do believe that if you had a little more power it would be a little easyer to shoot well at 300. of course I dont think its a good idea to get a fixed power scope over 14x to 16x because if its a hot day and you have a fixed 20x all you are going to see is heatwaves!  If you do decided to go with a high power varible scope make sure you get good glass otherwise the extra power is going to be worthless. in my opinion the super sniper is at the very bottom of good glass.

Hope this helps.

Jeremy
