I have a newer 6-20X50 leupold Mark 4 and in my opinion it has excellent glass. I have never looked through a SWFA 5-20x50 or bushnell Tactical 3-21x50 or Nightforce 5-22x50 which all get good reviews. To any of you guys that have compared them side by side how does the Leupold Mark 4 stack up?
I also have a Leupold 6-20X56 VX-L which has the best resolution of any scope i've ever looked through but it does have a bigger objective . Are my leupolds in the same ballpark as these other scopes or am i missing something?
I am not asking which is the toughest or has the most useful turrets or reticles just glass clarity.
Give your opinion if you have tested them all.

First note I have not looked at a Leupold but I have used the rest/ I suspect the ranking by most will be
1. SWFA SS HD 5-20X50 This is an exceptional scope $1000 less than any real completion.
2. Leupold Mk 4 Just by what I have heard from others.
3. Bushnell 3-21X50
4. Nightforce has superb mechanical s but the glass is not the same quality.

I have looked through all of these with the exception of the SS. I would rate them this way from experience and what I have read. To me the Bushnell is ever so slightly better than the Nightforce. And from what I have read here the SS is better than the Bushnell.

1. SWFA SS HD 5-20X50
2. Bushnell 3-21X50
3. Nightforce NXS
4. Leupold Mk 4

Bushnell ahead of Nightforce?  I'm not sure about that one.  And which Nightforce, specifically.

Having compared the 5-20SS and 5-22 NF side-by-side, I couldn't really tell a difference (full sun, no clouds, low mirage, prefect conditions.)  I liked the glass in both.

My list, of those 4, would have NF and SS together, then Bushy, then Leupold.

All are serviceable, and if you can get an LE/military discount on the Lupy, the price is reasonable.  If you are looking at retail or thereabouts, forget it, much better options in that price range.

None are Henny/Kahles great (contrast, sharpness, edge-to-edge quality, and eye box) but all 4 can get the job done at reasonable ranges and under normal conditions.

Of the 4, I like the SS and NF turrets better than  the Lupy and Bushy turrets - though I have been told the Bushys would grow on me with use.

Nightforce must have made big improvements in the last 2 years. What I saw was washed and no contrast. In line with the old VXIII Leupold. Before the Diamond coat and blackened edges.

nightforce has stepped up their glass in the past few years, and the new ATACR is amazing. the leupold is the bottom of the barrel on that list. but i can't swallow the bushy pill due to their abysmal customer service and warranty issues. my next piece will be the ATACR.

The new ATACR Nightforce is a very nice scope .   Quite simply YES you have been missing something.  That said I do like the TMR reticle on the MK4 but the Nightforce ATACR scope is far better than the NF scopes from a couple years ago.

ATACR Nightforce is around $2,300 and 56mm obj. which puts it in another category, not in the same class as the scopes im speaking of.

RC My comparison is based off my Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50 with a NPR2 reticle that I purchased back around 2007 or 2008. And I was comparing against the Bushnell and a Mark 4 that were purchased this year.

My first scope was a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40 LR and it is not even close to my Nightforce.

YEP  - but you asked for an opinion - yes you have been missing something look at Heinsoldt, Premier and US. Optics and Schmidt Bender also.

You'll find your scope - you just wont want to pay for it when you do.

SS>NXS>Leuppy. I have not even looked through the Bushnell. Resolution of the NF and the SS are about equal, but the color rendition of the SS make it stand above the NXS, to my eyes. The Mark4 has functional glass, but nothing near the price range that they charge.
As far as reliability goes, my scale would go NXS>SS>Leuppy>Bushy. NF pretty much sets the standard for reliability. SS is also a very robust scope, but does not have the track record that NF has. Leuppy's have a great warranty... And the Bushy is gaining a great reputation, but is also a new design.

I just looked at the newest NXS this week at a dealer in Missoula.  I was flat stunned at the glass improvement.  I always thought they were pretty good, and pretty similar to MK4 glass, but this scope was MUCH better than the previous NXS (last one I used was a 2009 model), and pretty comparable to the Vortex Razor HD I had next to it.

Contrast was especially improved.

Still, I liked the Razor better overall.
