I'm reading a lot of differing views. I have a Burris 3-9x that I'm mounting on to a Mini 14 and there are some that say mount it as far forward (towards the muzzle) and allowing full view. The other advice was to mount it as close to my eyes without the scope smacking my face. Finally.. there's also the option to just mount it in the middle since it doesn't make that much of a difference with the scope I'm using, on the rifle, and the variables given (not too big of a scope and its mounted over the ejection port).
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Certain scopes allow the mounting of them in different positions. They are designed to have your eye a certain distance from the eye piece (which is the part closest to your eye) It is called eye relief. If you want a far forward mount, you have to buy a scope that is designed to do that. They are called scout scopes. They typically have an eye relief factor anywhere from 7 inches to 15 inches.
A tradition scope usually has eye relief of 3 to 4 inches. So that means you would mount it over the action of the rifle and fairly close to your eye. Do mini 14s have the option of scout scope mounting? The one I used to have only allowed me to mount it traditionally. You sound new to optics, this is a good post on the terms and how scopes work. http://www.opticstalk.com/topic5027.html It should help you get started. Then we can help you find the scope that will fit your wants and needs best. |

Ruger Mini can only mount in the Scout position if you get the rail/guard for it. Otherwise its traditionally with the rings over the chamber.
Thanks for the link, I'll definitely take a look into it. I'm definitely new to optics. This is the first firearm I'll be mounting a scope to (I'm normally a handgun guy).

Simply put,you should mount it so that when you shoulder the rifle, with your cheek on the stock in a natural position, you don't have to adjust your head for a perfect view. Getting there with some scopes, mounts and rifles is a bit more complicated.

Had a Mini- 14 in the 70s with a scope mounted on it in a conventional manner, don't remember any special requirements... kept the scope and it finally gave up the ghost last fall. lol
