I'm mounting a scope (6.5-20x50mm Simmons Whitetail Classic) on my .30-06 and am wondering if the front objective is too close to the barrel. I have exactly a dime's width or 0.05" of clearance. I've seen those slow motion youtube videos with the gun and scope flexing a great deal, so I'm a bit worried. Is this too close? If so, what's a safe margin?

You should be fine as long as it doesn't touch. I did a mount up on a rig the other day where you could slide a piece of paper between the obj and barrel but not a post card. The closer the better without touching. The barrel will move but it will be the end of the barrel, it will isolate or barrel whip which ever you prefer to call it. So go shoot and don't worry about anything you will be fine.Wink
I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Dime's distance is cool.

The 30-06 recoil might be a bigger problem for that scope.I would mount that scope on a 223 or a 22-250.I own that scope and for the money it's fine but would keep on a light recoil gun.

Another consideration is flip-up covers, if you plan on putting covers on be sure you have the room for them also.
