Hey All,
I set my son up last year with a fixed power 4x32 conquest on a 16" .243. I liked how it performed but had an issue on his second buck tag.  A beautiful buck came in at 10 feet ...yes 10 feet and he had a hard time finding it in the scope. Now I ordered him a 2.5-10x56mm Nikon Monarch Gold I got for 250 bucks as new. I am not big on huge objectives but for that price I could not pass it up. From what I have always understood a large objective doesn't helpmuch on a low power scope but then read somewhere( maybe here?) that a larger exit pupil does help for critical alignment. I have noticed with most kids I have hunted with that they seem to struggle to find the right head position. I am also toying with the idea of swapping the Zeiss on a VX-3 2.5-8x36 and trying it versus the Nikon. Another option was to try a holographic or red dot but I have never used one and am afraid if  his head is not positioned right the POA/POI will be off. Is this true with this type of sight or do the crosshairs disappear when you aren't aligned properly? Most of his shots will be inside 100 yards if that matters. I tried a few of the lightweight 2-7 leupolds and even the Burris 1.5-6x28 but they all had terrible fish bowl / alignment issues. Thanks for the help.

Personally, I'd find a decent 1,5-6x42. It should cover most, if not all of his needs.
