My early-seventies Marlin 336 in 35 Remington is being retired from "primary" deer-rifle duty as I just got a Savage 11FNS in .308, and a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40. :)

So...  It's time to take the old Bushnell Sportview 3-9x40 off of the Marlin and set it up to be more suitably specialized as a short-distance, low-light, woods-hunting rifle:  Basically,  I'm thinking about a hog set-up or a still-hunter for whitetail.

Here's what I'm believing might be more suitable optics for a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington for the sticks of Western Piedmont NC:

Bushnell Elite 3200 1.5-4.5x32 with Firefly reticle?

Or Burris Fullfield II 2-7x35...which recicle?

Or should I consider something red-dot or hologram?  I don't know jack about them.  Is there something else I'm not thinking about?

I'm far from a seasoned hunter, actually just regaining interest at 52, so all opinions appreciated as always.

Les

 WELCOME to OT,Les.

Both scopes you've picked would work fine for how you'll be hunting.  In the Burris I'd go with the #4 reticle.  With the Bushnell 3200 even if you don't use the Firefly the reticle is wide enough for low light aiming.

Please humor my noob ignorance...  ...but what's the good thing about a #4 reticle?

Thanks.

#4 provides thicker outer posts than most other reticle styles so they are more visible in low light.  At the same time, it doesn't have a thick post in the 12:00 position, so the view is less obstructed in the upper portion of the FOV.

For hogs, or deer for that matter, in the area I hunt.  I have had great success with 4x.  The areas where the hogs and deer are in my neck of the woods present about a 50 meter average shot.  If you are in the right spot, you might be able to stretch it to 100 meters.  I don't personally own a Burris, but friends I hunt with do and I have been very impressed with them.  I think your power selection is spot on.

If I put myself in your shoes with the rifle setup you are talking about, I would select the Burris with the #4 reticle as previously state by 300S&W.  It would be a real great setup for what you want to do.  Just my two cents.

Anyone have opinions on the Nikon Monarch 1-4x20 http://swfa.com/Nikon-1-4x20-Monarch-African-Riflescope-P42349.aspx

Versus the Weaver Classic V-3 1-3x20  http://swfa.com/Weaver-1-3x20-Classic-V-Rifle-Scope-P2864.aspx

...for my Marlin 336 in 35 Rem "hog rifle"?

Thank you.

Having not used either I'd go with the Nikon due to it's reticle (German #4),the eye relief (4"),and it's better lense coating.  Nothing wrong with the Weaver but it's in a different class.

Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-x50 with the German #4 reticle and the illuminated red dot

I've killed numerous hogs at night with that scope.  Absolutely awesome for hog hunting.
