I know nothing about scopes.  Am wanting to add optics on an Armalite AR...something good for out to 300 yards.  When I say I know nothing, I really mean "nothing".  Don't know what the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd number mean, other than on the the 3rd diget, I believe I would be able to see something better if the number is large.  It was suggested by someone I met at a gun show that I look at a Nikon, and I believe they said a Bushmaster.  I looked it up and can only recall that the price was around $320.00, I believe it was a 4 x 16 x 48?? and it had the bullet drop compensator...but now I can't remember which Nikon it was.  I keep hearing about  Weavers, but again, I'm a novice.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Welcome Hello...... Exactly where is your price range? We can make several suggestions for a good scope, but need to have an idea what to recommend in your budget range. It will help also to have a good idea what you want to do while the scope is mounted on your rifle. Is it for purely tactical, or for target, or both with one being higher on the usage scale.

Hello.  I would like to spend no more than $350.00.  I will mostly use it for target...as in paper targets.  I believe I found the Nikon that was recommended to me, but although it looks like a good scope, I can't determine if it is since I'm pretty ignorant about scopes.  I'm learning that there is a lot that has to be taken into consideration when choosing a scope.  So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

OK. there are some things that will do fine for that.
I'm sure there are more, but the SWFA site seems to be down. I keep getting server errors.

Oh.... I see you said you know nothing about scopes...... The first series of numbers 3-9x for example means variable magnification or power. In this instance it would be 3x up to 9x. The next number would then be the size of the Objective lens.

Also. I would stay away from anything that says  AO, or Adjustable Objective, Side Focus until you have some experience with using scopes.

There are some Nikon Monarchs on the sample list also. The Plex reticle will be good for target shooting.

Bushnell
