hi guys, first time poster here.excellent forum,i've scrolled back quite a ways and learned quite a bit,but i'm hoping you all can help me further. on a whim i  recently bought a remington 700 PSS .308 at a local gunshow. i've always been interested in long range,sniper-esque shooting, and now i've really been bitten by the bug. i've been studying everything i can find on the web about the mil-dot,i have a mil-dot master, ballistic cards, etc and have a pretty good grip on all that,at least in theory. i now have a budget mil-dot scope, but am now looking for something more ideal. i've been struggling with  the urge to spend roughly a thousand dollars on a new leupold.this is,after all, just a hobby. the MK4 M-1 4.5-14 50mm.( $929 including shipping, standard rings and bases) is really pulling my chain.and their raved-about warranty speaks loudly,as well, yet,i keep reading lots of good stuff about the most economical super-sniper. yeah, yeah,i know you get what you pay for, but again, this is still just a hobby, and the bucks are a factor,so i'm also looking at other cheaper options like the bushnell elite 3200,the nikon buckmaster tactical, the leupold 3-9X,40mm.PR, etc.etc.yet,i don't want to buy something only to soon wish i'd gotten something else.though we're having considerable trouble finding large enough places to shoot,my goal is to shoot targets beyond 500 yards, hopefully out to 1000.from what i've gathered, i'm sure i want a 30 mm. tube, target knobs,mil-dot reticle,10-14 max power, preferably fixed,40-42 objective lens (up to 50 OK).

so considering my relative budget and shooting goals, what would your collective wisdom and expreience recommend i get ??many thanks in advance.....m.r.

I bought the Leupold Tactical Mark 4 4.5-14x50 several years ago.  I can't believe how much it has gone up in price a since I bought it.  I was in your same position several years ago and was also bitten by the sniper bug and bought the same rifle and scope you are considering.  Although it is an excellent scope, $900+ seems like alot to pay for it.  I looked on the SWFA website and I think that I would go with the Leupold Mark 4  4.5-14x40 PR.  It sells for $699 with a duplex and $789 with a mil dot.  It is 30mm, has side parallax, and tactical knobs.  It will do everything that you would want and will save some unnecessary money.  Also I read up on the mil-dot and learned how to use it prior to purchasing my setup and thought it would'nt be complete without the mil-dot reticle just like you have.  Honestly, after shooting long range for several years I never really use it.  I ended up buying a laser range finder, dialing in the range and shooting.  The mil-dot is kinda cool but really not worth the trouble to me.  I would probably save the $90 bucks and put it toward something else, perhaps an inexpensive range finder.  Just my thoughts.  Take care.

To use a mil-dot or duplex reticle on a rifle that will never be in harms way is a matter of personal taste. Look through both styles and decide which you are most comfortable with.

At one time mil-dots were one of the most reliable ways to estimate distance to long range targets. When the laser range finders became available most switched over to using a laser for verification of primary range estimation and used mildots for as a back up.

I still use mil-dots for leading moving targets and for emergency back up ranging. Most variable power mil-dot scopes were designed to range targets on their most powerful setting. (example a 4.5-14x50 would need to be on 14x for ranging.)

Remember one of murphys basic laws, "Anything that can break will break when you need it most." While the mildot system is not as accurate or fast as a laser, if used properly it is more than accurate enough to let a shooter engage targets with confidence.

Hope I helped.

thanks for the advice, guys. while stumbling around the web last night,i found a leupold MK4 4.5-14x40mm. for $625 !! from what i've seen, this is about as good as it's going to get,so i jumped quick.i then called another company who had the accessories i wanted and had them price match the scope from the first company, and the rings from another, then in some convoluted twist of math, they gave me the scope for $608 !!! so,after adding a sunshield,flip-ups,30 MM. standard rings and bases, with 2nd day shipping, i paid $725 for a decked-out, 30mm. mil-dot MK 4 !! i ain't cryin' !!
