Welcome to the OT.  You won't find a better scope for your price range than a super sniper.
http://www.swfa.com/c-231-super-sniper-rifle-scopes.aspx

Only downside is they are fixed powers.  But not always a downside just depends upon your use.

Joe in that price range there are two very sound possibilities.
1) The SuperSniper Very solid scope, and good glass.
2) The Millett TRS-1 or TRS-2
There are other scopes that aren't necessarily TACTICAL but yo can get the MILDOT reticle.
Check out the SWIFT line There is also the Sightron line. I hope this helps.
WELCOME to the OT

That 300 ultra mag is a humper thumper .... make sure she " your choice of scopes " can take the recoil .... humm I don't think there's been any ratings on massive recoil statistics on here .

If you eliminated the Super Sniper 10x42 then the answer is NO there is no good tactical scope in the $300 to $500 price range.  Add money, sorry but that is just the simple truth. The next step up in quality is the IOR 6x42 Tactical and that is over budget.  The Leupold tacticals are over budget. About the only thing that would come close is to custom order a Leupold VX III and have the custom shop add M1 tactical knobs ($120 or so) to a

The problem then becomes the limited amount of internal adjustment presented by the one inch tube and the power range not being all that your cartridge needs.
My suggestion is save up for a Leupold 4.5-14x50 mark 4 tactical with duplex and add kenton Ind engraved knobs, or just accept the limitations of a Super Sniper fixed 10x42.

Your gun is a recoil-machine, which limits what scopes can be mounted, and really limits what will work in your price range.
As it is a very hard-hitting round, make sure whatever you get is rated for magnum guns.

My advice would be to buy the 10X SS now and decide later if you want to trade up.  The SS is great glass at the price, is bomb-proof, and will work well.  If you want variable, few optionsa re available at that price point, given the recoil of your gun.

U-friend is right, save up or accept the SS's fixed power.

Your gun is a thumper, I'm curious to know why you got that caliber and what you plan to do with it?

I'd say your best chance of success durability-wise for recoil (you didn't mention how much the gun weighs though) for a variable in that price range is to find a used Leupold 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 (some available on the sample list right now as well as everywhere else) and have M1 turrets put on it.  I found both to be completely reliable on my light 300 RUM for hundreds of rounds each.  That said, I don't use either anymore....  You can often find 4-14 Conquests used in your price range with Mildot and turrets for some better glass at the cost of less travel.  No matter what scope you get, if it's a heavy tactical scope don't try and attach it to the rifle with cheap mounts.  I believe a large number of "heavy scope failures on hard kickers" are, in fact, mount failures that get blamed on the scope.

One can sure say that, though it depends upon completely upon what one defines as "good." If a SS qualifies as "good," then I would argue there are some variables that may as well.  Many have been happy with some that Cyborg mention, along with various Elites.  Not necessarily all "tactical" scopes but with some of the features wanted.  And, while I don't want to talk it up too much here, I've been very pleased with the 4-14 Falcon.  I can't yet vouch for its durability on a 300 RUM, but so far it hasn't missed a click (pun intended  Big%20Grin ) on a 7-08 and is doing everything a tactical scope should well.  If the 300 RUM breaks another IOR I'll put this on without hesitation--serving as "back up" with compatible features was a large reason I got it.  I wouldn't trade it for a 4.5-14 Leupold.

IF you are not going to be doing much "snap shooting" at close range, the Super Sniper would work well for you.  It has 13ft FOV at 100yds and if most of your shooting is at longer range, you will have plenty of acquisition time.  13ft at 100yds is not bad.  I am seriously considering one for my Browning 7mmMag.  The only other options for me are a couple of very high priced variables, and they are options because I would "hot swap" them on a couple of other rifles.  If I get the SS, it will stay mounted on the 7Mag.  Just some thoughts.
