    Posted: July/30/2011 at 01:02

Hey guys - I need to pick up a 20MOA base for a Remington 700 short action and I'm swimming in choices with no idea what to look for in a quality base. (Badger, Warne, TPS, EGW, etc.) Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

All the brands mentioned will serve you well. I have Badger, but the others are probably just as serviceable.

Don't forget Near... it is one of the best on the market.  Precision...

You could also add Seekins to the list... Badger's have a built-in recoil lug on some models. EGW's tend to be a little higher off the receiver than other companies.
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Haha. Yeah now I am confused. Ask an vague question and get a bunch of answers. Sorry. Ive always been a battle rifle with surplus ammo guy so the precision rifle is all new to me and I have no clue what I'm looking for in a base. I'm guessing most of you have tried them all and it just comes down to personal preference. I'm thinking I'll go with the mid-range, IOR or Seekins with matching rings.

Just noticed some of them come in various metals as well. I'm assuming alloy if I want light weight and steel if I want durability?

I don't see a badger with recoil lug and I'm not sure what the purpose is. Can someone explain the purpose of the recoil lug on a base?

Thanks guys!

I run Badger Ordnance but the others mentioned are quality mounts. For your project I would leave off the Warne not that they are not good I have several sets but not for a tactical type rig. If I didnt go Badger I would probably go TPS.  I think Talley makes some also and everything I have gotten from Talley has been fantastic.

I value a quality rail, I guess I would put a little more emphasis on the rings, is all I'm saying. Especially when it goes on a factory receiver that's probably already a tad wonky to start with.

The TPS or Talley that Wes posted will be more than adequate. I use and love TPS and Talley products too.

My future choice for mounts is the Near rail, probably with the Near Alphamount.  They are constructed of a proprietary steel alloy very close to aluminum weight, stronger, more durable than steel.
US Optics makes rails for "unusual" applications... Like CZ 550.
TPS is quality manufacturing.  Never had a complaint with any TPS hardware I've owned.
EGW rails have always been very good to me.  I have no complaints about them either.
Warne is a good name, not my favorite to deal with in ease of installation, but certainly good stuff.
I've not used Aadland mounts/rings, but have heard good things about them.  When I have an alumininum application, I will certainly give them a try.  I don't think they are building rails, yet.

I said all that to say this... there are a lot of very good rails out there, lots of very good mounting hardware.  It generally comes down to personal requirements, likes, "look"...

Hmm...I think I'm going to go with a Badger base and rings for this rig. Hopefully I can get it all installed and out to the range next weekend. Now if I could only shoot straight.

Thanks for the help!

You will be pleased with the Badger setup.

Any of those will work well. I had a chance to compare a Badger base with two of my Seekins bases and found that while it was within tolerance all the way along the base, the Seekins were 100% uniform throughout their lengths. We're only talking thousandths here, but Seekins seems to be as detail-oriented as they come. They even use a multi-flute thread mill to cut the threads. The Badger also had just a touch of rust in one of the mounting holes right out of the box/wrapper. I have other Badger mounts and M1 tools so I'm impressed with their stuff, but just reporting what I saw and measured.

Reaction time is a factor...

P.S. I have to read Chris' post to see how he does it, but mounting a badger seems risky:
