I'm thinking about putting a Leupold 3-9x40 VX-R Patrol Tactical on a Savage 10PC rifle. I want to set this up as a portable target/tactical rifle that will be accurate out to 600 yards or so but will mostly be used for target shooting in the 100-300 yard range.
Would this scope be good for my purposes or should I be looking at something completely different? Do I need more magnification? I want as much quality as I can get and I want to stay at or below $800 if possible.
I'm new to this so all advice will be appreciated.

The leuppy is a good choice. I personally prefer the reticle in the 3-9 SS to the TMR. The scopes are both very similar but the edge in glass normally goes to the SS. But the Leuppy has has an illuminated reticle. Both seem to have good reviews.

The SS 3-9 would be a great choice in that price range.

Thanks for the welcome and the recommendations! The SS 3-9 looks very good. The consensus seems to be that it has better quality glass than the Leupold. I like the reticle too.
If I did want more magnification, say up to 15x or so,  what would be a good choice? Again, I would want to stay below $800 - $900.

http://swfa.com/Weaver-3-15x50-Tactical-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P49448.aspx
From the reports I here the Weaver has a slight edge in glass even though it is less expensive. But the customer service and warranty of the Vortex is pretty spectacular. I was really trying to decide which of these scopes I was going to buy when SWFA introduced the 5-20 SSHD and really irritated my wife...

Does anyone here have any experience with Sightron scopes? The SIII 3.5-10x44 looks extremely nice and I've heard very good things about it.
It's $150 -$200 more than the SS 3-9 and I'm wondering if the quality of the optics or anything else warrant the difference in price. I'm most likely going to go with one of these two scopes and don't mind spending the additional money for the Sightron if I'm really getting a better scope.

Both are good scopes, but you really need to decide what you want.

SS 3-9x42 has a front focal plane reticle and no side focus.

Sightron S3 3.5-10x44 has a second focal plane reticle and side-focus.

SS is a better tactical scope.

Sightron S3 is a better target scope.

Pick what works best for your needs.

ILya
