My sister-in-law asked me to help her come up with an idea for an essay she has due.

Can ya'll give me some ideas?

Here is what she sent me.

Ok, next Sunday I have to write an essay and I need help!!  I have to answer this question and I need some ideas.  Help me think.....(Please!!)

Think about a skill that most people DO NOT have but could benefit from mastering.  Why would people benefit from mastering this skill?  What are the consequences of not having this skill?

How about CPR?  The benefits for having the skill, as well as consequences for not are obvious.

Good manners and courtesy could stand a revival among the youth, a short course in cell phone manners would not hurt as in resturants etc. Everyone benifits from these and many confrontations can be avoided entirely. There are many books available for reference. A good general defination of consideration for others and their feeling and opinions should be included.

Ps. If she gets a good grade send a copy to RMS

  1. The ability to write in coherent (complete) sentences. (You'd be amazed how many resumes I receive that are just complete messes.)
  2. The ability to read and understand text that is beyond the "8th-grade" level.  (Again, the number of functionally illiterate people running around is quite staggering.)
  3. The ability to perform simple mechanical repairs like changing a tire, basic plumbing, etc.
  4. The ability to perform basic math (arithmetic) skills without the use of a calculator (or your fingers.)
  5. The ability to plant, grow, and harvest your own food.
  6. The ability to speak comfortably and meaningfully in front of groups of people.
  7. The ability to think for one's own self.

The subject isn't as important as the elements of style.

Introduce the topic  Are ___ good enough _____ this generation?  introduce with interogatives.

transition to the supporting arguements--  They may have been but --- so and so (quote authority) is supporting etc

flesh out the paper with alternatives. This skill will allow you to do _______ and _____ without having to ______

elaborate with explecatives. argue from the general to the specific or from the specific to the general but not both

conclusion --- summarize and conclude

consult Little/brown (a book on style)

the arguement may be weak but if the elements are there it will work

a stong arguement without elements , the reader is left wondering as to the subject

personally I thing the skill should be a 6 sec El Presidente.

One skill that people do not have, but could benefit from mastering?

Common sense.

Reprint any speech from any prominent democratic senator (Kenedy or Feinstein, for example) and turn it in.  No additional comments will be necessary.

+100 on koshkin's idea. Common Sense is a virtue. Applying it is a skill. I worked with cops that could recite case law and procedure endlessly, but couldn't catch a cold in a phone booth.

I know that most people wouldn't think this would be a skill. I have trained with a lot of people from all over the world. I have noticed the main skill that most people doesnít use or even understand these days         &n bsp;         &n bsp;         (self discipline).

Iíll explain. I see it from my 3rd grader all the way to the people that work for me. When things get hard Physical or mental the mind state of ones inter self says they canít achieve there goals. So people give up. This stands  in all aspects of life.Money,marrage,work,ect.....

But, is common sense really an "acquired" skill?  I dunno.  To me, common sense is something you either have or you don't.  I know some very "book smart," educated people with zero common sense.  Maybe spending some time with an elderly person who's worked hard all his/her life and has a lot of practical experience in a lot of different areas would be a way of acquiring common sense skills?

Knot tying is a basic skill that many people don't have. Knots are used in boating, fishing, around the house and vehicles and in scouting. There are plenty of web sites for research and graphics for support.

The understanding that economics is not a zero-sum game.
i.e. to help the disadvantaged does not requiring punishing the advantaged.

the zero-sum fallacy may best be seen at work in the european socialist "democracies" with their high unemployment, stagnent ecomomies and soon to collapse unfunded giveaway programs.
no reward for excellence equals little excellence

imagine if the founding fathers had been kennedy, schumer, feinstein and al sharpton.....

All good suggestions here.

Was thinking of "social skills".  In my view it would incorporate "manners/courtesy" as suggested by Duce, "communications" from jonbravado & add the element of Tolerance.  Tolerance for people of different race, socio-economic, eduational backgrounds, etc

How many otherwise smart people have you known that were lacking in social skills that held them back.
