I am new to the forum, hello everyone.  Let me first appologize for this being long winded.  First i am not an avid shooter but an avid hunter, although I go to the range 1-2 times per month.  OK i went Saturday with my grandfathers Savage 99E .243 WIN post 1951 model.  I have never shot the gun and I mounted a Simmons 6.5-20 X50mm Whitetail Classic Scope on it, too big I know but wanted to take long shots at coyotes.  The gun shot great I had a nice group at 1.5" high at 100 yds with 80 grain Remington Express.  I went back to the range yesterday with a new box of the same ammo (previous box was old, not sure how old price tag of $9.00!)  Anyway first 3 shots didn't hit paper.  I went to 50 and hit 4" high 1" right.  Finally got it zeroed at 50 and went back to 100 all over the place again.  I never got it sighted in with the old ammo box or the new.  I checked all scope mounts were tight.  I will mention that i shot three rounds of handloaded ballistic tips and all 3 shots touched each other (Only 3 left from hunting with 243 as a kid).  Any help would be appreciated.

You either have a box of real wonky ammo.......or your scope is not holding POI. I'd try another brand and box of ammo, and if that don't fix your problem......I'd try another scope....in that order.

First the, initial ammo was old and lacked power, as the new ammo was 4 inches high at 50 yards and therefore would be 8 inches high at 100 yards.  Cannot explain why it was all over the place at 100 yards, unless the barrel was hot.  Although you did shoot the handloads that touched, which rules out the scope.  Try a different brand of ammunition and make sure the barrel stays cool and do not make adjustments in the scope until you have made a 3 shot group.  After adjusting the E/W, tap them firmly and use a rest to do the sighting in and you should be fine.  Welcome to the OT and let us know how things turn out.

Thanks for the help I am planning on trying some federal premium this weekend.  I did swab the barrel after every ten shots or so and I let the barrel set at least 30 seconds or so between shots. I will update.

DITTO on the ammo Bro. Try using different brands and stick with what shoots best. Bear in mind that different lots are also gonna shoot slightly or even greatly different.

I shoot a 308 Savage 12BVSS. I have shot Blackhill, Federal Gold Metal Match, Fusion, Winchester Supreme, Hornady TAP and Hornady Light Mag. I even tried various bullet weights.

It definetely prefers the FGMM 168gr and Hornday TAP 155gr (both 1/2" MOA). The Fusion I use for hunting is under 1" at 100yrd. The Winchester and Hornady LM looked like a shot gun went off.

I changed the scope out twice on my Ruger 22-250 thinking it was the scope. I started out shooting the 40gr varmint loads and was ready to sell the rifle it was so bad. Then I tried a box of 55gr Winchester (which I thought was crap given my experience with the 308) and started shooting clover leaf groups.

Keep trying various bullet weights and manufacturers. You will find one that suites your rifle.

PS: Sitting atop the Savage is Bushnell 4200 6x24-40 thanks to all the positive comments on this forum. ALL of my other scopes are Leupolds and yes I happy with them as well.

Now if that isnt an invitation for an Aggie joke I never heard oneCool
There were two aggies who were on the track team and they got permission to hunt on a very nice ranch. One of them shot a nice buck down in a draw so they went down and cleaned it. They decided they would each grab a hind leg and together drag it back up the hill to their truck. About half way up the hill the ranch owner comes by and says No No No you boys are doing this the hard way you are getting extra friction from the hair being drug backwards you need to each grab one side of the horns and drag it so the hair is going the way it grows. So they did. About ten minutes later one aggie says to the other man this sure is easier that rancher was right. The other says yea it sure is but we seem to be getting farther away from the truck.
