ok now that I am out on my own buying these scopes and rifles I have a new appreciation for them and how expensive they are I was fortunate enough to grow up looking through leupold vari x 3 s my whole life and am somewhat spoiled because of that I will always use leupolds or better when in extreme conditions of the elements but dont think it is nescessary all the time.  I have an encore and want to expand my llibrary of barrels currently I have a 204 and a 2506 for it and want to get some more may be a 17 hmr next any ways how would some of you rate the following brnds of optics as some of you may know owning an encore can be fun but you can become optics poor real fast if you let it.  I have a weaver v 16 right now on the 06 I also have a leuy vx1 3-9 sittin idle I am interested in getting the following rifles scoped

a 788 in 243 and my 204 barrel

I aqm thinking about getting a mueller what do they compare to as far as clarity performance etc.  What about a swift premir vs say a bushnell 3200.  where does the bushnell banner come in.  And another thing I have considered is the refurbished Nikon buckmasters.

Thanks in advance.

how about you send me your 788 and i will send you a nikon monarch

swift vs bushnell3200 would be a good matchup swifts are pretty good and would rate it a hair better than a nikon buckmaster and they have a lifetime replacement on them take it to where ever you bought it and they hand you a brand new over the counter.
i would put the leupold on the 17hmr

I can't say about the newer Banners, I have one that may be 10 years old now It's a fine scope, hasn't let me down yet and is on a 300 rum ruger. Bushnell 3200 is a better scope glass wise but not by much, the coatings are the real difference there. I would go with a Legend in Bushnell or a 4200 elite in todays market.
Swift is one that I have no hands on here but from all I've read is a fine scope for the money.
WELCOME to the OT, I hope we have been able to help you here.

Just bought a new banner in 3x9x40 and it is clear and bright. Probably would compare to the buckmaster or older redfields I have. Not a bad scope but not a 3200 elite either.

The Muellers are good scopes for the money, I own several.  The only thing that bothers me, is that all but the TAC II are made in China, the later being made in Japan.  All perform well and the optics are clear and bright.  I own several Swift Premiers and they are fine scopes for the money.  I agree with cyborg, if you go for a lower end Bushnell, the Legend is a great scope, especially for the money.  A 3x9 40mm for a little over a 100 dollars is a steal.  I believe they have fully multi coated optics.  I own a 50 mm model on a 308 and it tracks as good as any scope that I own.  It has become, or will become my low priced go to scope, when I am strapped for cash.

Dolphin, how do the swifts and meullers compare on equal powers head to head? You are the first I've seen with both brands to compare.

You know, I have never taken them a compared them head to head, but I would have to say they are probably equal, with maybe a slight edge to the Swift models.  I do know that I was going to mount a Burris FFII on I believe a Tikka and had an extra Swift or Mueller sitting around and compared it to the Burris outdoors for about 30 minutes.  The difference was immediate and after 30 minutes of clarity testing, testing for flare, changing power, etc, albeit not in a strict scientific manner, I put the Swift or Mueller on the rifle.  I just cannot remember which one.

Thank You, I've been looking at both and leaning towards the swift because of the schott glass. If you ever compare the two head to head on equal power let me know your opinion. Knowing they compare to or exceed a fullfielf ll tells me a lot, I've tested those.

I actually have a new Swift on my relatively new Savage 40.  The combination is great.

I was speaking of the mueller apv which I am assuming is lower end than the ones mentioned above.  I like what I hear about the swifts how would someone rate them in comparison to the 3200s?  I can get a deal on 3200s to where they would cost roughly the same as a swift is it worth it?
