i can't really abide by purchasing 1000 binoculars for fear of loss.  so i have the following choice with no available testing site.  prefer european manufacture.

doctor 8x42 . . .$400

zeiss conquest abk . . .$750

demo zeiss victory 1 . . .$799

i was blown away by a pair of victory fl that i tried, but couldn't stomach the price.  would any of these even approximate.  also i am an eyeglass wearer, but the 16mm eye relief on the FL's didn't bother me.  thanks.

Well, by restricting your choices to "European manufacture," you have unduly limited yourself to almost no choices at all. Include high-quaity optics of non-European manufacture and you open a world of possibilities - many of which are at least as good as the very best of the Top European offerings, let alone the "budget" European stuff. Expand your horizons a bit and in the under $1000 range you can enjoy options such as:

Bushnell Elite  $ 980.00 As good or better than any binocular made, anywhere. Period.

Leupold Gold Ring

 $ 949.00

You can nit-pick on styling but, this one is also nearly as good as anything else on the market.

Kahles  $ 770.00

You don't see these much but, those who have them, swear by them - and with good reason.

Pentax DCF SP

 $ 600.00

Very few people can honestly tell the difference between this binocular and those of the "Big 3."

Leupold Pinnacle  $ 460.00 Often referred to as the "poor man's Zeiss."
Pentax DCF WP II  $ 390.00

The brother of the one that started today's trend of high-quality at reasonable prices.  A great binocular.

Bushnell Discoverer

 $ 350.00

Possibly the best mid-priced binocular availiable today.  This is a highly underrated, absolutely fantastic binocular.

Bushnell Legend

$ 290.00

One of the two best "entry level" budget binoculars.

Nikon Monarch  $ 290.00

The other of the two best "entry level" budget binoculars.

There are others as well including models from Brunton, Leupold, Carson, Steiner, Minox, etc.  Don't sell yourself short by assuming that Europeans have some secret that allows them to turn out quality that is somehow unmatched.  All you are really buying is the snob appeal of their particular "badge."

I've have very minimal experience with the Doctor Optics brand so, I'm hesitant to give any direct opinion.  I do know that those who own them seem to like them.  I know nothing of their warranty service, build quality, reliability, etc.

For these reasons, I would tend to prefer the Leupold (or one of the other well-established and commonly encountered manufacterers) just because of the relative ease of service and brand familiarity that I would be able to enjoy.  The Leupold Pinnacle, Pentax DCF WP II, and Bushnell Discoverer are all within the same $400-ish range that you listed for the Doctor Optics binocular and I would be very comfortable with any of these products.

lucznik,

Great post! I tend to share your opinions of the binoculars you posted and in that order too! :-)

well i broke down after untold hours of internet research and bought the minox 8.5x42 asph (bd br model).

will post my review after playing with them.  i found them cosmetically appealing, and they have great reviews on multiple forums in reguards to toughness and image quality.  perhaps i could have found some refurbished bushnell elites for a little more but i elected to go with these.  ( we'll see if i live to regret the decision.)  in addition these minox binoculars are allegedly among the best for eyeglass wearers.

thanks for all the input.
