Hey im hoping you guys can help me out... I just bought a bushmaster varminter and im having trouble picking out a scope. Ive spend hours searching and it seems like theres a downside to everything that ive found that looks good to me. First of all i'd like to keep it at $400 max., second i will be using it mostly to hunt coyotes at night WITH a red lense spotlight, but also a little occasional daylight shooting. I would like a scope that i can really zoom in on a distant coyote with. I also think i'd like one with an illuminated green dot rectile so i can see it well against the red of the spotlight, but with a dot small enough that it doesn't cover up the target. I like the trijicon's rectile's but i dont have that kind of money right now. Im sure you guys know some scopes off the top of your heads for me. Please help..thanks!

Also, do you have to shut off an illuminated scopes rectile when you're done hunting or does it just drain the battery? or is there even a battery? sorry dont know a thing about them.. thanks for any help you can give me

For just about all scopes with illuminated reticles other than a few with fiber and/or tritium illumination (like the Accupoint), there is a battery.

Higher grade scopes usually have auto shutoff, but in your price range, I would not count on it.

Generally, I would not recomment a whole lot of scopes with illuminated reticles in your price range.

My typicall recommendation for a varmint scope in the $400 range would be Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44.

However, for your specific application, Hawke Sidewinder Tactical 30 4.5-14x42 might be worth a look.  It has dual color reticle illumination and very decent performance for the money.

That is probably the only illuminated reticle scope in your price range that I often recommend.

The idea the you are going to use a high magnification scope and really zoom in combined with the idea that you are going to shoot them in low light or at night simply do not work well together.
A 6x42mm scope will be a bright optic the same 42mm objective will be less bright at any power above 6x in low light.  In bright daylight having the high power scopes is not a problem but at night it is a huge problem.  Illumination is a blessed curse, most systems use a battery of those Aimpoint is the most reliable having very long  battery life and a special design that makes the dot much more effective than other systems, read this http://swfa.com/Aimpoint-Red-Dot-Sights-C4.aspx
The bold heavy duplex reticle in the Leupold 6x42 scope is quite effective even without illumination in low light and 6x42 is not only as bright as the scope can be but also about as much magnification as a man can hand hold and shoot without using an extremely solid rest. If you plan on using a high magnification optic for coyotes also plan on using a solid rest:

I don't see it on the website, but I did see it in a shop. VX-R Patrol 1-4x with GREEN illumination. It had green script on the outside of the scope, some sort of zombie eradicator. I don't know if they offer it in the 3-9.
