I am trying to decide on a scope for my spr ar 15 223. Target shooting out to 600 yds , and the occasional coyote are the victims. Rifle will shoot sub moa. I want something in the 4.5-14x44 range. Price needs to be kept under $800.

Here is what I'm looking at.

  1.    Leupold vx3 4.5-14x44 AO                     $600
TMR retical installed at custom shop              $130
M1 Elevation dial installed at custom shop     $  60
                                                                        --------
                                                                        $790

Would just as soon have the cds dials. They are only $20 more if you order a scope with them , but the AO model is not available with them. The custom charges $90 apiece to add them.
This scope has a 1" tube, but with a 116 moa adjustment range I don't know that I need a 30 mm..
+ Well proven company thats been in buisness a long time , and I'd bet they will be in buisness if I need warranty work.
+ resale value on leupold if I ever decide to sell is real good.

 2. Vortex viper 4-16x50 pst (not the FFP)

                                                                       $699

+ 30 mm tube. Don't know that I need it , but it is stronger.
 + $91 cheaper
  - 50 mm I don't care for them makes the scope bigger than need be.
? Don't know much about vortex. Will they be in buisness down the road for warranty work ?
? Extra 2x magnification. Don't know that I need it , but don't know that it would hurt.
? Illumination. Don't think I need it . Could possibly be useful sometimes , but adds weight & bulk.
? Side focus. From what I've read Ao might be just as good if not better.

This is what I'm thinking about right now. What do you think ? Anything else under $ 800 that would fit the bill ?

Not a lot of guys have the PSTs in hand, but so far reviews have been favorable.  Vortex will also make CDS-style knobs for the PST.

Both companies have excellent customer service reputations.  Vortex has been around a lot longer than people realize (Remember Stokes birding optics?), and I don't think they are going anywhere.

I definitely prefer side focus for parallax adjustment.

I think you have two good options there.

Yeah the few reviews that I've seen have been pretty good , but not stellar. Was some concern about the turrets being to easy to turn , but supposedly this has been corrected.

Did the test scope come straight off the line or was it hand picked is one of my big concerns with a company sending something for a test.

I was under the impression the 4-16x50 pst was available at SWFA. I didn't see backordered mentioned.
