Folks,

First post to this forum so any guidance you provide would be most welcome.

To try to make a long story short, I have a really nice Remington M1903 I bought as a shooter and found out after purchasing it that the barrel was demilled then later drilled out by some Bubba smith and needed to be replaced. My smith is going to put a Kreiger match barrel on it and I requested him to convert it to an A4 configuration (scoped). So it is no longer going to be numbers matching anymore or anywhere near historically correct.

So I have begun the process of thinking about what to scope it with.

Some have suggested that I get a period correct Weaver or Lyman. But since the rifle is no longer historically correct, I am leaning towards a more modern scope.

I started looking at a Leupold Vx-L 6.5-20x56 LR Vrmnt Hntr. I like how it can mount really low. But the price of clost to $1200 is a bit much.

But then I found a good deal on a new Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 (below $700).

As you can see I am looking towards a high power variable as I hope this will be my long range tack driver.

What would you recommend?

Usually before we recommend a scope we like to know your hunting/shooting intensions if they're not already in the post. You say long range. Hunting or target shooting? Long range only? Cartridge chambering? Those would be a start.

Thank you for the kind welcome.

I would use it for 100-300 yards ( 300 for the most part) target shooting. The M1903 is chambered for 30.06 and I use mostly Greek CMP mil surplus ammo and the occasional commerical loads.

A Springfield has got a pretty good bolt lift.  A fat eyepiece scope will be hard pressed to get into anything lower than Medium....maybe not even that....you might have to stick with a traditional sized eyepiece...

Can you please give me some recommendations of one with a "traditional sized eyepeice"?

The smith doing the conversion said he would bend the bolt handle to have an A4 configuration and I should be able to mount just about any scope I wanted on it.

I was thinking it would be best to get something that could mount as low as possible, thus my initial interest in the Leupold. Especially since they claim you can usually use low mount rings. But if it is not going to clear, well I certainly don't want to buy something I cannot use!

You may want to reload to get what the gun can really do out of it.

Sadly I do not have the space necessary to reload myself. I wish I had the room.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that I have suffered with really crappy eye sight recently. Thus using traditional iron sights with corrective glasses is very difficult. I usually can get away using a scope (or red dot) without glasses Roll Eyes
