A friend of mine bought him a Mossberg 4x4 Bolt action 30/06 rifle today. It came with a crappy Simmons scope which he plans on replacing. 1) What can you tell me about the quality of the gun? 2) What suggestions on scopes? I was thinking of a Nikon Monarch as that would probably be at his price limit. Thanks---Bboy623

Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 would be great and not break the bank, the rifle should provide all the accuracy that one needs for almost all hunting conditions.

+1

Or the Nikon Primos 3-9 would be another good choice.

$149.95
Add Bushnell 1.5-6x42 Trophy 30mm Rifle Scope to Cart
As you can see these three scopes are quite different in power range. One guy may stalk game and want a lower power with illuminated reticle to get onto game quickly in timber or brush.  Another guy may want higher power to make a shot from a box blind at several hundred yards and may want to take time to evaluate the deer's rack with higher power optics.   Another guy may want a scope that is simple with less stuff to go wrong a really tough really bright optic like a fixed 6x42.  It all depends on how you hunt.

Thanks guys. I forgot to add it would Mostly be whitetail hunting. I also thought of the Team Primos as well, excellent scope for the money, and I'll tell him about it...just don't know if he'll like the BDC. What brand of ammo would ya'll recommend for him?---Federal, Hornady, Winchester?---Bboy623

There is no need to buy fancy/expensive ammo for taking deer with a .30-06.
Anything 150- 165 gr. is just about perfect, although some prefer lighter/heavier bullets.

I notice no one has mentioned Remington pointed- soft- point Core- Lokt ammo.

The Core-Lokt bullets have a somewhat protected point which helps accuracy by preventing  meplat (bullet tip) deformation and the bullets hold together well and have a long history of both great expansion and penetration.

Other great scopes to check out- Vortex and Sightron.
There are so many great scopes out there, a guy can get himself confused making a choice.
Won't tell you how I know that...

Well what-do-you know......my friend brought over his Mossberg 4x4 30-06 to show me. I liked it so much I had to get me one, although I had to drive to another city to get it! For the price I couldn't pass it up. It is a really nice quality rifle. And I wanted something a little stronger than my .270. I still want my X-bolt in .300 WSM....but this will definitely do for now.

So now I'm on the scope hunt as well as my friend. The clerk told him it was a 3-9X40 Simmons. To me it looks more like the low end Bushnell. Regardless, MINE is coming off and a quailty optic is going on! Well...on to shop---Bboy623
