Hello Fellas, and thanks for your time. I have been struggling through all the info on scopes and am on the fence between Burris Black Diamond or Leupold VX-3. I have found a GREAT deal on a Leupold and have emailed the fellas here at swfa to see if i can get the 110%, but have not heard anything back. It has been a couple days, is somthing going on here at SWFA, because I have also been having problems with the websites...

So price difference is inconsequential... but i cannot find any dealers in my area that offer both to get a head to head comparison.

Does anyone know if either optics are better, ie. brighter in low light, less fuzzy, etc.?

Features appear to be identical- site focus, finger adjustable win/elevation etc. But it is hard to get all the Burris specs as their website is FAR INFERIOR to Leupold's... and while I know that it means nothing I hope it is not indicative of their "technical Savvy"

Anyway, your comments would be greatly apreciated!

Well, VX-III is typically a bit lighter than Black DIamond, but Black Diamond, IMO, is a better scope in every other way (tougher, brighter, etc).

So you do think the Burris is brighter, that is my main concern... all (acurate)scopes are equal to my eyes except dusk and dawn! I want the brightest available!

Thanks

It would help to know which exact models you are comparing, but for the same magnification and objective lens size Black Diamond will be a little brighter.

Hello, and thanks again!

I am now considering either Leupold 4.5-14x50 VX-III or BURRIS BLACK DIAMOND 4-16x50. Any help there would be great also as I am really on the fence!

But here is part of my delima... With light being a HUGE factor for me is the 56mm objective that much brighter???

If it is then Nikon makes one within my price range and the Zeis Conquest 56mm is kinda close to my range. But...

People do not seem that impressed with Nikon rugedness and features

And I could go an extra $150 for the Conquest but it doesnt even have fully multi-coated optics

Every Conquest has full multi coated optics.

The ojective bell size by itself is only important as it realtes to the size of the exit pupil (objective lens divided my magnification).  Your eye can not dilate to more than 7mm.  with a 50mm objective you get a 7mm exit pupil at ~7x magnification.  I can not envision a hunting situation where a larger objective bell would make a difference (unless you hunt in Europe in the middle of the night).  In my opinion even a 50mm lens is too big as a I would seldom use magnificaiton beyond 4x in the field.

Conquests are great scopes with excellent glass, but I would probably still stick with Burris Black Diamond in this price range (and out of yuor choices).  I do not think there is enough performance difference to justify the price difference.

Just out of curiosity, how did you end up looking only at these three scopes?  What kind of hunting/shooting is this for?

Ilya

Hi there I mainly hunt and shoot some. My biggest priority is the brightest optics i can afford, and most of the advice I get in the $500-700 range is Burris & Leupold. What might you suggest???

For big game hunting you really do not need so much magnification.  50mm objective lens scopes are big and heavy and upset the balance of the rifel.

Look at varioius 3-9x40, 2.5-20x40, 3-13x42, etc scopes.  Conquest 3-9x40 is probably the most optics for the money and at 4x or 5x or so it will be bright enough for anything you might ever need.

For less money I am a big fan of Sightron S2 3-12x42.

There are other very good scopes in this general configuration: Bushnell Elite 4200, Burris Signature Select, Pentax Lightseeker, etc.  THey all have their advantages and disadvantages and different people prefer different scopes.  They are all agood though.  I am partial to Sightrons, personally.

Thanks EVERYONE! Keep it coming, you are all a really big help!!!

Brady, thanks for following up, yes i did get a response. To be honest I got a little frustrated and emailed two more times, of the three emails the results are as follows:

one NO

one yes, but they were not in, call back

one yes, but they were not in, and they would not offer me the free items though the store is offering the EXACT same things, you just have to call and ask, their site(D&R) is not as advanced as yours

You guys(SWFA) are great but getting this 110% thing has become an agravation for me!
