AWESOME, cbm!
I took two of my kids out today and they made so much noise I didn't expect to see anything, and didn't.
It was a nice day and they had a great time, so I'm not too bummed about another fruitless hunt.,
Especially after reading about your son's first deer!
How old is he?
Congratulations!

Thanks guys !! He just turned 8 in Sept. ! It has been a slow process of getting him to hunt and shoot................but it all came together tonight !! He is an excellent shot .............I was telling him over and over to shoot tonight and he told me to quit because he wanted to make a good shot ! So I shut up and let him do the deal.............seemed like an hour to me but it probably took him 2-3 minutes before he shot !!

Today was our gun season opener. I was suprised at how few hunters were out today.
I had kinda dreded todays hunt expecting everbody and his brother to be out in force. Not so, only 4 besides myself came to the club. Not that we have a big club (9 members) I think. But even the other clubs that run dogs didn't appear to be heavy with the usual numbers.
That I didn't mind so much as many of them don't respect other peoples property. Anyway I usually perscribe our harvest goals for each season and this yr. like last I asked that mature does be taken as oppertunity arises and only take a buck that the individual considers to be a trophy. Preferably 14ins. or better. We have a very good mature buck base and several trophy class bucks for our members to persue. The land owner and I are good friends and we handle most of the culling. It was a cool overcast day around 60F and the wind was light out of the west. I reached my stand about 5:00 and at 5:45 had taken a large doe at 80 yds. with my BAR 270. I moved from there to another spot I hadn't been to this yr. hoping to get a chance at a large 8pt. that has been seen near there. But not today, suprisingly nothing showed up there today. One of the new younger guys took a doe as well. But the others didn't see anything. A suprisingly quiet opening day in our area of the state. I'm not sure yet whether to be glad or concerned.

I had been settled in my stand with a perfect wind direction Friday, and was anticipating deer movement as twilight approached, when some stupid oaf came clomping right up the deer trail, blatantly and knowingly trespassing.
Wrecked that setup.
I wasn't pleased...

makes you want to shoot right as he passes and make em crap himself. Was he hunting or just out to screw up hunting? NC has a hunter harrassment law on the books. Don't know if it has ever been used.

Got my buck this morning. He was an 8 pt this year . It was 34* and a tad hazey . I heard some running and looked out and could barely make a doe out. I looked back to where's he usually scrapes and he was freshening up his scrape and then he walked out !! He was a better deer than I expected ........grew a fair amount of bone since last year !! I shot him with my new 6.5x55 and a 140 grain Fusin bullet. It dropped him but was not a passthrough........I can't complain, it did the job very well !! I had just heard about how these 6.5's penetrate so well , I was just a little suprised at no exit !! Anyway..........he was the only deer I was really after this year ! And my son getting his first deer just a few days ago is just flat out incredible !!

I wouldn't be to concerned about pass through with the fusion bullet, it was designed as a deer bullet, was it stuck on the offside hide?

I didn't really look too hard ! And I did break his leg on the entry hit so I know that slowed things down considerably !! I just read about people break elk legs and moose legs and still getting full length penetration...........but then again.......that's the internet.......who really knows ?? !!

Glad to hear cbm and Sarge are off to a great start. Sorry about your problems RONK. Had a similar incident many years ago and was sorely tempted to rattle a round through the trees.

Well after a big goose egg in archery season, the rifle season is off to a good start. We (my Dad and I) woke up Sunday (traditional rifle opener) to head out deer hunting up on some private land near Lewistown. We got up there, and there was six inches of new snow on the ground! What a great start. Half an hour in, I saw a nice whitetail doe 108 yards. And since I had a whitetail doe tag, boom, meat in the freezer! She was facing me. Took her through the heart with a 140 gr Accubond from my 270. Ran 30 yards and ate it.
About five minutes before legal shooting light ended, spotted another doe. My dad had a tag, and I didn't want to use my A tag (buck or doe) on it. He leaned over the hood with my rifle and boom. Hit both lungs and the liver. That doe took off like a bullet train through the woods. Went about 400 yards before dropping. First time I have seen that. Took 40 minutes after dark to find her. Was a great day spent with my Dad! It was a beautiful day. Sunny and fresh snow. No one else near us. More great memories! |
