I stopped by a friends house the other day. He was refinishing and older, wooden stocked rifle. Anyway, on the inletted areas and beneath the recoil pad he was liberally applying Thompson's water seal (three coats). Seems like a good idea. What does everybody on here think? Yippee

You bet.  Waterproof the entire gunstock, including under the buttplate ( if it can come off...if it is a recoil pad, well, that stays on...)

Water can get in the damndest of places. Once there, it will cause discoloration of the wood, and can cause the finish (depending upon type) to begin chipping away. My 7400 Remmy was a prime example of that happening. Water proof the living hell out of it just to be sure. I am working on a friends 22 auto as we speak, and it was a victim of water damage too. I suspect that any number of guns that see a fair amount of hunting use, also see a fair amount of water damage to their wooden stocks.
