.257 roberts .300wby 6.5x.284 6.5x55 swede .280rem are desirable right now.

disclaimer****  i figured i would wait until the day before the show so i wouldnt have so much time to change my mind, plus then ed wouldnt capitalize on a new thread at my expense.Laugh

Buy almost any "reasonably" priced AR15 or Kalashnikov rifle.  Prices are finally coming down in price and no 2nd ammendment supporter should fail to purchase one.  It might take a year, 10 years, 20 years.... but eventually you won't be able to get one.  Might as well pick one up now while plentiful, available, and at a fair price.

If you can't find a fair price one, don't buy.  I totally understand that.

Put it away, shoot it every once in a while.... but make sure you get one if you don't have one already.

How about a decent quality .22 LR like a CZ?

+1 on the CZ .22.  I think the new Sig 522 are TOO COOL! One of the 556 Sigs would be higher on my list than an AR.

Pick up a well-used Rem 700 and have re-barreled in the 6.5x284. Or, a nice SAKO , Browning, or Win model 70 in the nifty 257 Roberts. The 257 is one GREAT round that should by all means be looked at for a come-back.

^^^^ I agree with the 6.5x284 on a cheap 700, and the model 70..257 sounds good too never had either caliber, but these two rounds really interest me and will probably be my next purchase.  Good luck and happy hunting.

i wish i could purchase a used ak or ar type rifle, unfortunately in minnesota you have to possess either  permit to purchase a handgun or a cc permit, neither of which i own. and actually you have to have a permit to purchase just to buy a stripped ar lower. stupid!

kimber remington and ruger are currently chambering a rifle in .257 bob right now, but im not sure if it will take off again, the 25-06 is so popular, unfortunately for the roberts. i hold (and always will) a soft spot for the roberts. i started big game hunting with my grandfathers pre 64 m70 .257 ned roberts. someday i will have a roberts of my own.

Pyro the I went back to the gun shop to look at the Rem 700 in the 300 Weatherby mag and realized it was a lefty. Sorry I got you all excited about it. $500 still seems like a good price. It is in very good condition.

I'd have to second the suggestion for older 700's.  20 years and older when they were smooth as glass.  The 2 side screws on the rear bridge of the receiver is a dead giveaway for a 700 action built back when they used to advertise "honed action".  Older BDL's in 30-06 or 270  you get the standard bolt face.  Rebarrel in a stainless 6.5-284 and slip it into a McMillan Edge.  Ooooh.

Odd you can buy a rifle but not a hi cap type without a pistol permit or ccw?  It shouldnt take much to get a permit to acquire a pistol should it ?  My thought would be to get an Encore frame and have Bullberry build you a custom barrel in your choice of caliber.
http://www.bullberry.com/  the barrel could be mail ordered and then you could acquire another barrel in a different caliber as desired.   I really think you should have a hi cap gun but there is a lot to be said for Tikka s unfortunately I dont see many of them at shows. You might look for one of the stainless Savage accutrigger accustock rifles.  If you dont have a .308 its time they just seem to reload well.  The other rifle that really strikes my fancy but I dont have is a Marlin 45-70 stainless lever action.  The 45-70 is a dandy caliber with lots of loading options.

Pyro  how about a 250 savage, then you can join the swap barrel club and have just abouy anything you want at reasonable prices. The only hard part is finding after market stocks, but more are starting to show up as demand is increasing.
