I went to the Bozeman gun show today.  First thing that hit me was how high prices were.  Several items you could get at the local stores for less money.  Was looking for a good remington 700 action or mauser 98 action.  Saw some 721 actions, but they wanted $349 for them.

So on to the idiots now.  Went by a booth just as a lady was trying to get a guy to buy as scope.  She told him it was a VX-3 at 20% off.  He lifted the scope and looked through it and said man this looks nice.  Well, I looked at the box and scope, and could see it was a VX-I.  I asked her if she liked to try to rip off all her customers.  She just stared at me and said, this is a good scope.  I looked at the guy and told him what the difference was.  He handed the scope to her and told her where to shove it.  I laughed so hard.  The great part is there were about 40 people watching who all walked away from that booth.  For the next hour and a half I didn't see one person approach that booth.  She really pissed me off trying to swindle people.

I directed him to the SWFA sight and Optics Talk to research and get advice.  We will see if he shows up or not.  I recommended some other scopes as well and he said he would probably just order one of the recommended ones from SWFA.  Who knows.

I only go to gun shows these days if i'm looking for a particular item...they've turned out like garage sales...

Yeah I had a few items specifically, but didn't find anything.  Saw a few things that gave me ideas for my AR, but I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere.

The best use of gun shows is to trade off something you dont want for something you think you do want.

I agree that most of the guns show's are rummage sales, at least the last few I've been to.

What I mean't was years back garage sales were only a way of getting rid of stuff to make some room...these days it's all about making as much money as possible.

The gun shows i've been to lately all the prices are the same as in the shops...I only go if i've got something I need thats secondhand.

Our local gun show had the Counter Sniper folks this year! They were really talking me up until they found out I was a member here, and on The Hide. I really don't get how people can try and push junk. Just baffles me.

Oh, I love gunshows...I just can't afford all the stuff I want ( which is just about everything!!!)

Well, I don't want junk, of course.  But 95% of the guns I want are old, discontinued models.  I bet 80% of all the guns I have bought over the years have been second hand.  I love to go to a store that has ....like.... 500 (!) used long guns to look at!!!     Bucky

I used to go to a store in Kansas that had this many new guns and even More used guns than this picture!     Bounce

i guess im lucky the dakota territory gun show i go to in jan. is excellent, and like ed said i cant afford all the stuff i want when i go to them either. its coming up soon again, last time i bought oprah, this year i wish i could buy something again, but i probably wont. some of the people there sell "junk" but a lot of the dealers there sell nice stuff. one guy sells nothing but bulk brass and primers and powder etc. and another guy sells nothing but clips for pretty much anything, and his prices arent anything close to ebay "raping"

I go to the shows with the same attitude I go to the movies.. I stare at the stuff like a deer in headlights for 2 hours and leave ...Haven't bought anything at a show in a long time ..Around here in MD it's generally nothing but retail plus some priced DPMS and Bushmasters at every single table ...literally

Had a gun show here this weekend. One of the vendors noticed my SWFA hat. He says he can beat any price SWFA has by 30 dollars...... I said really? He shows me SWFA price list that he has. Says he's originally from Texas too. I looked at his inventory, and there are only some items common between him and SWFA, and guess what? He's atleast 30 dollars higher than SWFA..... I pointed this out to him, the Buckmasters, Legends, Monarchs, Trophy's, and EOTechs. He says, "I can't sell them for that, and make a profit" I asked him why he would attempt to sway me? Told him I was one of the Moderators at Optics Talk, so I knew exactly what I was talking about. He promptly put that price sheet away, and two other potential customers asked me which moderator I was. I told them, and they said they would be doing their scope buying here. Yippee

I am of two minds about the difference between the stocking dealers at gun shows and the good mail order places.  A GOOD dealer who stocks, and who may be a ta gun show deserves some consideration for showing hard goods in person.  A good mail order place, like SWFA, deserves consideration for making great efforts to serve customers and provide excellent prices and service.

I am also very interested in bicycling and skiing.  In bicycling, stocking dealers have a very legitimate gripe with customers who come in, size themselves for bicycles using the dealer's stock, and then order online  In skiing, I often find that some of my students have purchased either ill-fitting or ill-suited equipment by mail or on the net.

In my opinion, if you rely on someone's service, you owe him special consideration when you purchase.  If you use the optics talk forum and read the user reviews, then you should give extra consideration to SWFA, even if the price is not quite lowest, and if you hve to put your hands on the scope at a dealer, you should give the brick and mortar dealer a little extra consideration.  Of course, if a slimeball tries to push off a VX-1 as a VX-3, then you need not give any positive attention to the dealer.

I used to love to go to gun shows.  I don't like them anymore.   Sometimes I go and trade brass for ammo.  I haven't found a "deal" at a gun show in quite a number of years.  They are not like they used to be... but, my collection is not what it used to be, either.

To me, gun shows are another outlet for entertainment.  It's just something to do, like going to a movie I'm really not all that fired up about.  I rarely buy anything at gun shows, but every now and then, I find a decent deal to be had.  Yes, there are some ripoffs and unscrupulous sellers there.  Sometimes I enjoy screwing with them just for the hell of it.

I go looking for deals on a couple things, which I didn't find.  I like looking around and seeing what is out there.  And I love screwing with the dealers that try to rip people off.  Devil

Yessuh, me too. Had one guy that sells IOR, Sightmark, and NCStar. He said to this one fella why pay so much for a top line scope? I whispered to the fella, look through the IOR, and you decide. Yeah, I made a sale for the vendor, the IOR went home with that feller. I look at it like this. The price for the IOR was reasonable 1200 dollars for a 4-14x 50 tactical illuminated MP-8, and this feller will be happy with his purchase over what he nearly bought. This vendor always is nice to chat with, though he is still a smarmy salesman. He knows that I shoot, or did shoot a lot. and we talk about scopes quite a bit. Yeah he'll make statements that potential buyers want to hear, most after all are rather oblivious to what we here know. Plus he does have a delectable daughter. If I was twenty years younger..... WOOHOO......

I love a good gun show. We've got some good shows here, we also have some why did I waist my time and money shows as well. I just missed a good show this past weekend, but I had to much to do and no money. Besides good deals, the thing I like about gun shows is finding that item (not necessarilly a gun) that you didn't know you couldn't live without and at a fraction of the price of retail or collector's value. I also like visiting with friends at some of the shows.
I'm almost positive I bought a scope from SWFA at a gun show; if SWFA ever did gun shows here, and it was a good deal.

I like most of the shows we have around here. I try to be one of the first in the door on the first day to score on powder and primers first and then I see if there is anything I may be interested in. If I do and I don't like the price I'll risk missing it and go back the last couple of hours of the second day. If I can't get my price then I know I gave it my best shot. But some great deals are made in those last two hrs.

The only good thing I have found from a gun show here in NC is that they have primmers and powder. That is if you get there three hours before they open, fight the crowd and rush back the the farthest point in the building hoping they haven't sold out already.  Beats paying a hazzerd material shipping fee though.  Not as big of a deal anymore now that stores are getting them back on the shelves.
