What do you guys have for gun safes, and are you happy with them.  I've been looking and haven't decided on whether to get the manual combination turning type lock... you like the description... or the electric pad punch key type.  I'm gonna have to buy something small cause their really expensive, and I've noticed that some say they are "14 gun safe", and in reality it doesn't look like you could fit 5 in there.

Yeah--I have a 36 gun older Liberty Safe and there's no way in hell 36 of  anything will fit in it..Add an AR15 with a scope and it kills a huge chunk of the space. The ratings are just for the indents they put in the racks...add scopes or pistol grips and figure you have to divide the count by 2.
Mine is an old fashioned combination safe and it works just fine.

Hi ckk1106,

I am going through the process of buying a safe myself right now. I hope tomorrow I will be plunking down around $1500 for a new 31 gun Liberty Safe. I felt they were the best value for the money. I looked at competitor , Heritage, Browning, Canon, and Liberty. The Canons can be had for a good price at Academy sports, but they were not the same guage of steel as the Liberty.
As for how many it will hold, most dealers say one gun per square foot. Thus 31 square feet = 31 guns. But, if you include guns with scopes, the scopes will take up a lot of space.
Also, don't put a lot of consideration in the fire proof test. You want the weight to help deter theft, but most house fires last 2-3 hours at up to 2000 degrees. If you live in a frame house, usually it will vent the heat quicker than a brick home, so you may save your guns yet.
The safe I am looking at weighs 800 pounds and it will be bolted to the floor to deter theft.
Same as Martin 3175 , I'm looking to go with old style combo lock.
A little long winded, but hope it helps.
Derek

If we have not had this conversation for a while... May I suggest rather than one large safe a couple of smaller ones.  Look for some old weight lifting stuff at a garage sale or some old tractor weights and dump those in the bottom.

The other thing I might suggest is hiding some guns behind a pannel of some sort or duct work.  Think closet space or hidden storage in a dead spot some place.   That way it is harder to loose everything to theft.

It's not the couple of hours at a couple thousand degrees that does in the guns... It's the safe setting in the coals for hours getting blasted by steam from the hoses, trying to put out the coals. You can help with some fire brick or even just dry wall stacked around it.  If you put the thing in the basement everything will fall around it...  YMMV  Talk to your friends on the fire department.

It is a daunting decision to decide which to order, I decided on a Browning Copper Series 34 cu. ft., just waiting on it to arrive.

One consideration is if you order one, the shipping is very expensive, around $400 for the one I ordered.

Bought a floor model Fort Knox 18/36 at a gun show a few years ago.  It is a fairly basic model with a S&G manual combo lock, not fireproof but well built.  Cost me $1000 but I had to pick it up.  Luckily had a pick up and young friends at the time.  Have it full with 36 long guns but it is a TIGHT fit - saving grace for me was not too many scoped guns.  For me a second safe of the same size would be a better choice than one huge mother.

I know exactly what you mean. I have a Sentry 15 gun safe. The spacing inside these safes are a joke. Don't get me wrong it provides great security for only 800 bucks, but the spacing inside is very limited when try to put scoped rifles on the inside. I've been contemplating buying a Browning 36 gun safe, even though I don't have no where near that many guns, my collection should fit comfortably inside a safe that size.

Another good tip:  Buy more space than you think you will need.  You will wind up putting other things (like important papers) in the safe once you have one.  Your wife will also probably want to put some of her things in there.

If you want to put papers in there........ you need to put them inside a special fire protection sleeve....... I can't remember what you call it, but if you ask a safe person, they will know!

My buddy put his in his garage and covered it up.... you wouldn't know there was a safe in his garage by looking in it!
