I just got a Ruger 77 Mk II in 25-06.  I have medium rings and an old Tasco 4-16x40 scope which just clears the barrel at the objective end by about 1 mm.  I have a Grand Slam 3.5-10x40 that I bought from SWFA a couple years ago on a Ruger 22-250 and am very satisfied with both.  I am thinking about the 50 mm Grand Slam for quality and price for the 25-06.  One concern I have is that the barrel on the gun is heavier than on other calibers.  I understand it is the same barrel as the 300 mag just chambered in .257.  The Grand Slam has a large power adjustment ring, but I don't believe that is going to conflict with the bolt.  I am most concerned about the clearance at the objective end of the scope.  I checked the Weaver website but did not find any detailed dimensions.  A couple questions.  Will high rings be high enough?  Is there a noticable improvement in the brightness between the 40 GS and 50 GS?  I was thinking about the Ziess Conquest 44 mm but it may be a little more $$ than I have to spend.  Any other scopes I should consider?

For a guy on a budget, like 99% of the rest of us are, you may want to take a look at the new Simmons Masters Series scopes preferrably an Aetec model.

44mm objective(will work with high rings, would be a good alternative to a 50mm objective. Especially if you like a good cheek to stock weld), completely redesigned, and only a Swarovski comes close to it as far as weight is concerned.

As for the 40mm vs. 50mm debate, I don't think the 50mm bell is worth the extra weight unless you shoot at high magnifications at twilight. A 40mm objective will provide a 6.66 exit pupil on 6 power. A 44mm objective will provide a 6.28 exit pupil on 7 power. A 50mm objective will provide a 6.25 exit pupil on 8 power. This is more than enough light to max your eyes out if you are near 40 years of age. You'll have to decide if the extra weight is worth the extra magnification or not. As for your eyes, I don't think you will be able to tell the difference between a 6.66 exit pupil or a 6.25mm exit pupil, your a man not a machine.

The new Simmons may be worth a look, they're just starting to trickle in where I'm from, so I haven't heard much feedback on them yet.

Good luck..........

I'd like to see the Simmons Master Series before buying but can't find anyone who has one to look at.  However, SWFA put a Grand Slam 3.5-10X50 on the Sample List, so that ends the search for a scope for the 25-06.  It should be at the casa today or tomorrow.  I may look at the Aetec in the higher power for the 22-250 later this year or early next.  Thanks for the heads up.
