Okay ... I have made a few entries into this OPTICSTALK forum in the past and have always received excellent feedback.   So I was lucky this week to receive from the family a new riflescope.  It is the ZEISS Conquest 4.5-14x50 Rapid Z 1000.  I had looked at this scope many times at my local dealer perhaps even leaving some handling stains on occasion.  My wife managed to sucessfully get the info from the dealer and pickup the scope for lucky me.

So now, which I think is somewhat of a reverse question for this forum, ...which rifle and caliber might you put this scope on?  I am thinking it is probably not ideal for hunting or varmint but probably more for target/tactical shooting?

I suspect there might be a few forum users out there that might already have this scope on some sort of wonderful rifle.  I probably want to keep the rifle cost to around $1000 or so.
I am initally leaning towards the tactical rifles in .308 Winchester as the Zeiss website seems to indicate the Rapid Z 1000 reticle is kind of setup with that caliber in design.  Maybe the Tikka Tactical or the Remington 700 tactical or perhaps a Savage tactical with an accutrigger?  But the 223 caliber also appeals re the recoil and ammunition availability.  A friend says the only way to go is 7mm-08 as it has some sort of optimum powder capacity characteristics.

Open to all almost all feedback/suggestions!

Regards,

Depends on how far you plan on shooting?...the 7x08 has no magic over the 308! and the 223 is a little light for distance.factory ammo is cheaper. all guns listed are fine choices, the accutrigger is supposedly  great, but so is a well tuned or after market one. and Savages are very accurate out of the box. tough call.

I believe you are correct about the Z-1000 having the .308 in mind. If it's something you are going to shoot quite a bit, the .308 would be a good choice too. It's not as important if you handload, but the ammo cost for them is pretty fair. Compare them to a box of ammo for any wsm, and it looks even better. As far as rifles, I can't start. There are too many out there, and out of about 9 rifles I own, 5 of them are same Make, and model.

Thank you for all the replies so far ... a question to TRIGGER.  I am wondering/curious re the make/model of the 5 that are the same?  I suspect given your Mr. 270  "moniker" that perhaps one or several are in 270 Winchester?

Not so much actually. I do have a .270 win. and a .270 wsm, but that is pretty much just because pyro is an "anti". I have 5 Weatherby Vanguards. Three are deluxe, one a compact, and one a Sub-Moa. They are all very good shooters,(though some rarely come out to play) so I see little reason to buy anything else. There are too many rifles out there that are great right now for me to recommend anything to you. Right now I've been working with the WSM a lot, and nothing else. I want to start to learn each rifle and caliber as well as I can one at a time. It is the Sub-Moa, and has the nicest scope on it, so I started there.

You can get  a really nice savage for a pretty good price. i have a http://savagearms.com/16fxp3.htm that i picked up for $350 at my local dealer (basically a steal) i couldnt pass it up, and the accuracy on the thing was outstanding right out of the box.

I am actually holding off on that. My grandfather has a Mark V Deluxe in .300 Wby. I hope to have that someday. I was considering selling my current go to rifle, and buy one in a .300 wby. as you know. Unfortunately it's not in the cards right now.

One is in a .300 Win. so it's close enough to Wby. for now.

I purchased the Browning X-Bolt rifle in 7MM-08 and mounted my Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 on it for my whitetail hunting and target shooting.
I also recently purchased another X-Bolt in .308 as this is my favorite caliber. I mounted the Nikon Monarch 2-8X32 on this one.
What I have found different between the two calibers is the cost! The 7MM-08 is about twice the cost of any .308 caliber ammo. They both shoot great. I consider both rifles to be lots of fun to shoot. Why did I buy the 7MM-08, I just had to have it I guess. The .308 was, is and always will be my favorite caliber, and I have tried many from .243 to the 30-06 and anything in between.
The Zeiss would do a fantastic job on anyhing you want to mount it on.
