Currently my gun shoots 4 inches above my target at 100 yards and I have the adjustments turned all the way. This may be a solution for me, but long term is it a good idea. will it keep a zero
over time?

i thought your gun shot to the side.... will then, try shims, i have seen people cut printing paper, and use it for shims before, and they work fine.

It is a band aid fix in my mind.  They do hold up if you use metal.  Coke cans work well.

Burris Signature rings have built in shims that you can change out.

Leave the shims alone and get out the Accra-Glas, or steel bed. This is a permenant fix.

Gotta problem rifle? I can probably help.

Hi Chris.

Thanks for that info.I needed to shim my 10/22 14 inches low at 25 yards

But i'm with you on the "band aid" fix.

Living across the pond though there is not much chance of a refund.

I am with chris Burris signature Zee rings are the way to go if you are using weaver bases. If not them Burris signature rings for leupold bases, you failed to mention what kind of base you have. I don't belive they are made for .22 dovetail mounts.

I'm sorry to piggyback on this thread, but since it's in reference to this post that my question arose I hope none will take offense. This Christmas I am getting BAR Longtrac Stalker 30-06.  I purchased a Conquest 3 x 9 x 40 Z Plex in  matte to go on it and I have ordered the Talley 930711 1 pc rings from you Chris, (Although I understand they are on backorder & I hope I get them before the rifle) My question then is since there is no elevation or windage adjustment on these rings, will it pose a problem using up the adjustments in the scope itself to get it set up?  Is there a better solution for me than the Talley rings?

You can buy a complete shim set from Brownell's that will last you 3 lifetimes.
they are precise various 1000ths thick and are the way to go.

If you have separate rings and bases you could take them to a lapping block and lap a thousandth or two.  It may take a while but no shims.

My 10/22 was in the dirt also and I used a lot of my adjustment.  Some day I'll revisit it and fix it right.  I just cranked until it hit...

I have an ar-15 and had to use high mounts to get the scope at the right height. Once I boresighted the scope I ran out of up windage. I know you can shim the base but will it work with a pictanny style rail??

Whacko I had to shim a Win70 express action due to the rear rec bridge being way out of spec, which was later covered under warranty, however that was to level the two bases to keep from loading the scope.

This seems it would load pressure on a scope adding a shim on an already flat set of bridges? makes no sense or are they not shimming the scope base?

As mentioned previously Burris Signature rings handle this problem nicely with their non-concentric insert kit.

I have used shims one time so far and they worked great. I had Leupold base and rings contacted Leuopold customer service and they sent me two sets of shims for free........

I have one Mauser action that is not within specification for the space between front and rear bases.  To keep everything straight and to keep from straining the scope tube with unequal ring height, I put a .010 inch steel shim stack under the rear base.  It has been that way for 35 years with no issues or loss of zero settings.
