I have just purchased a nice Ruger 77/22VHZ in 22 hornet. What would be a good optic for this 200 yard max rifle? I want good glass, but dont want to spen more for it than the rifle. That would be nuts!

IMHO- No that would not be nuts, it would be the smart thing to do. The better the optics the better the shooter and gun. Depends on your budget there are so many good scopes available.
This will give you a few to look at, GOOD LUCK....

Maybe, But I have won several matches with inexpensive optics. Weaveer V16's, Bushnell 3200's, And even 1 BSA Platinum Target, which is, in my oppinion, a big piece of crap. I was just looking for others oppinions on optics, This is not a 600 yard tack driver (.22 KHornet), just a 200 yard G-hog killer. I will take my .223 Remington with me for longer shots. And if I have to spend $500.00+ on a scope, I may as well not have the rifle. It will be a year before I can afford a scope.

I have the same version in 22 WMR and have a 3.5-10 Leupold on mine. All the scopes that medic mentioned are good choices. You can go down to a 2.5-10, though, and any 200 yd shot is not a problem on small varmints.
There are a lot of options but I do consider the Monarch's and 4200 to be the best choice for the money.

Here's a couple that will fit the bill and the glass and mechanicals are tops for the money.
The only Elite in your range is the 3-9x40 @ $290
If you are willing to go to a 3-9 the Team Promos Nikon is the same as last years Monarch. I have one and like it as much as the 3-9 4200 I got. It has the BDC reticle. $200

A quality variable scope with a 9x or 10x top end is probably the way to go. That will comfortable let you shoot out to 200 yards and then some. What you have to decide is whether you will see a lot of close range shooting, i.e. closer than 50 yards or so. If you do then you should consider a scope with adjustable focus, either AO or side focus.
A good choice would be Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 or Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x40 or Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40. If you are OK with a larger scope, Millett TRS-1 4-16x50 is a good way to go as well. Otherwise, if adjustable objective is not critical or if you want a more compact scope, Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 is one of the better ways to go. ILya |

Koshkin, Close range shots are VERY possible in Michigan, So AO or side focus is mandatory.

Close range shots? How close? Even without AO or side focus, a scope set to 3x or 4x will work fine at close range for most practical purposes. ILya |

ILya is right,
I wouldn't worry too much about an AO for your purposes. The 3-9x40 4200 will give you excellent glass and those woodchucks won't be very happy with it. I have AO's on three of my varmint rigs and I'm a Michigan hunter. I have never taken them off the 100 yard setting for critters. I am sure the western p'dog guys here use their AO's, but they're nuts anyways |
