This will be a Plains Game hunt, and I'll be taking a new Weatherby Fibermark in 375 H&H.  I know that I don't need a 375 for PG, but it's the quintessential African cartridge, and I just had to have one.  I may even wear a pith helmet.  Who knows.

Anyway, I'm torn between the following scopes:  Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32, Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36, and the Zeiss Conquest 1.5-5.5x38.  Honestly, this is not a dangerous game rifle, so I really don't need the ultra low magnification and high FOV, but I'd like to keep the rig suitable for DG in the event that I go back one day for buffalo or maybe even to Alaska for bear.  A Conquest 3-9x40 would probably be an excellent choice as well.  The reality is that this gun will kill a few African Plains animals next spring and then a whole lot of whitetails and hogs.

Any thoughts?  I'm normally a Zeiss guy through-and-through, but I'm willing to consider one of the better Leupies.

i had that same dilema on my hands with my H&H. so far i still havent got my scope. for now mine wears my 3x9 bushnell elite 4200. as long as there is enough room to mount those scopes on your rifle they are all pretty good picks, i like the zeiss and the 1.75x6 vx3 in that order. the 3x9 conquest would also be more than adequate as would a 2.5x10 4200.

Any one of three scopes you mention will work just fine.  It really comes down to what size scope you want.  Conquest 1.5-5.5x38 is a pretty hefty scope.  If you do not mind the weight, it is perfect for your application.

If you really want a trimmer scope, either one of the VX-3s would work fine, or you can take a look at Vortex Viper 2-7x32:

the viper will fit too, 5.3" to mount, i think when i measured my spacing it was 5.1" and my 4200 just made it.

The answer is easier than you think:
1.  Get "quick detachable" mounts (I use Leupolds).
2.  Get a 3x9 scope AND a 1.5 to 4.5+ scope.
3.  Put both scopes in rings that fit the QD mounts.
4.  Sight in both scopes, and have them both ready to go on the rifle.

This accomplishes three worthwhile objectives:
1.  You can choose and use whichever scope is best suited for the terrain and game.
2.  You have a backup scope with you that is ready to go.
3.  You can detach the scopes, and protect them better while traveling.

I've done this, and it works really well.

If within your budget Longhunter has the correct answer. Hunting plainsgame in Africa can call for 250yds shots.
I hesitate to recommend anything less then a 9X for these shots. I would think the 3,5-10 or so would be an ideal choice.

I agree on the QD type rings, but would say to stay away from the Leupold ones and use Warne Maxima's.  The Leupolds don't return to 0 as well as the Warnes do.  I never get a POI change when taking my scope off and on with my muzzleloader using them.  They are the finest scope mounts/rings I have ever used.

The Bushnell 4200 Elite 1-5 firefly is a nice scope.

I too, like Longhunters response. The Leupold's are also a fine choice.
I use Talley QD's on several of my rifles including a .375 H&H. The material, quality of machining and fit are top drawer. Better than the Warne QD's I have and they are no slouch, either.

Do you have time to change scopes in the field?  I can see having a back up scope in rings if something goes wrong.

I can change scopes with the Talley's in seconds. When a scope is re-mounted it is on zero.
When I travel out of state I always bring a back up scope.

Geez, that's a great idea.  I have Talley screw-lock (QR) rings and bases on all my rifles, and that's what's going on here as well.  I'll put a 1.75-6x32 on it for now, but I'll take along a 3-9x40 as a backup.  Great idea, and thanks.

I went 2 years ago and we hunted over waterholes. Most shots were under 100 yds, a few were around 250.  My wife used a 3-9, and I used 4.5-14.  We were hunting plains game as well(no dangerous, although lions were around).

I was much happier with the 4.5-14 range.  All of my shots were taken in the 6x-14x range anyway.  I would turn it down to 4.5 when walking in case I ran into something up close and personal.

Our PH's never had us hunting dusk or dawn just to avoid the predators and make trophy judging easier with the better light.

I don't know what your budget is, but I would want a quality construction scope in the 4.5-14 by 40 mm scope with concrete rings and bases in a concrete rifle case.  Airlines are hard on stuff, thats why you want the good case and concrete rings and bases.

On another note, for every minute on the rifle scope I spend 1 hour behind binoculars.  Go quality there, and take them in your carry on so they don't get "misplaced".  The group we went with, every one of us "lost" stuff out of our luggage.

Have you looked at the Vortex line?  I have put one on a 416 of mine and it has performed flawlessly... I have never thought about two scopes I figure I have express sights if something happens...
