Hi all,

I'm going to purchase a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40 for my Browning BAR Safari. I'm trying to decide between the gloss or matte finish. Since the BAR Safari has a gloss stock, I thought the gloss would look nice. I realize that the gloss finish will "stand out" more than the matte when hunting, but I'm not too concerned about that.

My big question is whether or not there are any durability differences between the gloss or matte finish? Does one resist scratches better than the other? Are the differences purely cosmetic?

Thanks!

gloss is for lips imo.

i dont think either one is more durable than the other.

Don't let the gloss vs. matte factor cloud your decision. Gloss will hold up fine ...and certainly does look good on said rifles.  Hippie

Thanks for the replies! If matte isn't more scratch resistant than the gloss, I may go for that option since I think that would look good with the gloss of the Safari. Then again, I'm sure the matte would look just fine as well. Decisions, decisions!

The only difference I can think of is it's easier to cover up small scratches with the matte finish.

Unless stealth is the issue its more of a personal preference IMHO as both should take the abuse fine. I think the gloss is more of an old school look and if you're rifle already has that type of finish why not have it match? Personally all mine are matte.

Take some sandpaper to the rifle or have it bead blasted...said the man with no bias against shiny. Big Smile

I put a gloss FX3 6x42 on an old sporterized Springfield A3 that has a deep, blued glossy finish.  I love the look, and bet you will too.
