I just picked up a SRH in 44 magnum with a 9.5 inch barrel. I want to put a scope on it for target shooting out to 100 and (possibly) 200 yards. I think I've narrowed my choices down to the following:
Burris 3-12 32mm Nikon 2.5-8 28mm Burris 2-7 32mm Weaver 2.5-8x 28mm This will be used strictly for paper punching, mostly from a rest, so I'm more inclined to go with the higher magnification scopes. I'm going to be loading up full-house loads, so my main concern will be durability of the scope - I want a scope that will last. Has anyone used these, or something similar in that range? Any other recommendations or bits of advice? Thanks! |

I have a .454 casull on the same frame with a 7 1/2 barrel, I don't use mine specifically for bench rest, so I have a fixed luepold 2x scope. I Have great faith in luepold when it comes to heavy recoil, and maybe the 2.5 x 8 vxiii would meet your needs. I know they are not the best optics as far as precision, but I have a hard time believing there is any scope more durable, period. |

Why do you say that Leupold is not the best optics for precision? Everything I've heard has been 100% positive for Leupold. I just can't justify spending $500 on a Leupold when (I'm pretty sure) any of the options above should get the job done.

It was just another suggestion, in your post you mentioned that you were concerned about durabilty and I know from experience that the luepold would hold up, the choice is yours.
P.S. 200 yds. with a .44 pistol is one heck of a poke!

If Elmer Keith could hunt at 600 yards, I figure I can at least keep it on paper from a rest at 200 yards

The Burris 2-7 would be a good choice. Mine's on a .454 and has held up for several thousand rounds. I don't think you'd find maginification higher than 7X useful on a pistol.

Hi Targetterror, I ran a ballistics program on the 44mag. so you can see the difficulties you may incur while target shooting to 200yds. First lets set some guidelines. 1) Bullet 240gr. SWC bullet /w/ BC. of .170. 2) Velocity 1400 fps. (pretty hot) 100 yd. zero, @ 200yds you'll be 24.71" low @ 500yds around 422" low. 200 yd. zero, @ 100yds you'll be 12.26" high @ 500yds around 265" low. I'm not saying that 200 yd. target shooting can't be done, but I'm pretty sure that takeing game @ 600yds with a 44mag pistol is next to impossible, even with a 200yd zero you'll be in the neighbor hood of 20' low @ even 500 yds.Not trying to diswade you from having alot of fun, just being realistic.

Oh I understand that shooting at 200 yards will be a daunting challenge, which is exactly why I want to try it. I'd really love to do some silhouette shooting, but alas, there is none that I know of in the Northeast. But I'd be happy if I can shoot well enough that I'd do alright in a silhouette match, and they have targets of more realistic sizes at longer distances.

Good luck and enjoy your new SRH .44, The .44 mag is such a great round, I sometimes wish my was of this caliber instead of .454. Less expensive to shoot, less recoil and muzzle blast & more than powerfull enough to take anything I'm going to hunt with a pistol. In the end, my eyes were bigger than my brain & according to my wife this happens quite a bit.
