This question is the most embarrassing one I've ever had to ask about scopes. I just signed up for opticstalk.com two days
ago...haven't seen this question asked. So, here goes. I was looking at Leupold VII 3-9's and Nikon Monarch 3-9's (both 40mm obj.) at the store. I sharply focused the recticle first. I picked out a sign about 40 yards away in the store and cranked both scopes down to 3x power. Both scopes were crystal clear. Although at only 3x I couldn't read the fine print. I then moved the power ring up to 9x and tried to read the same sign with the scope steadied on a shelf and I couldn't: everything was blurry. So I figured, "okay, it must focus on things farther away when the power ring is turned up. So I looked through both the length of the store and it didn't matter. On the higher magnifications things were blurry. The sales guy takes the Monarch and says everything is sharp. I left confused. This isn't the first time I've had this problem. Every scope I've tried this on does the same thing: Leupold, Nikon, Swift come to mind. Am I missing something? I tried it on an ATN scope at a gun show too: it was like a 4x-12x or something (don't quote me on that). But the premise was the same: non-adj. objective bell scopes at lower magnifications were clear. I crank up the power and look at the same target at 20-40 yards or so and the target is blurry. I don't wear glasses or contacts. I don't even bother looking at non adj. scopes anymore. Everything has to have adj. obj. My only educated guess is I'd have to look at something 100 yards+ distant at 9x to get a sharp image. But that sounds weird. What if you're shooting at something small at 70 yards and you need the power? Bryansd8 is mucho confused in Oregon |

On the end of the scope closest to you you will find an eyepiece adjustment on the variables that you are mentioning. You need to adjust that eyepiece for your eyes.

I assume you mean the recticle focus. That's the first thing I adjust. Indeed it sharped that...but nothing else. Adjusting it the
higher magnifications only UNfocused the recticle. |

"This isn't the first time I've had this problem. Every scope I've tried this on does the same thing.
I don't wear glasses or contacts."
I think these two statements are the key to answering your question. |
