The holographic image of the reticle is created by a laser. The advantage of a holographic image generated with laser light are:

1)       the aiming dot is not the image of an LED but a true point source. The dot size is limited only by the resolution of the eye.  For a person with 20/20 vision, the effective dot size is only 1 m.o.a. or 1 inch at 100 yards.  The HWS therefore provides highest shooting precision possible without magnification.

2)        the holographic reticle pattern can be very big and it is parallax free over the entire reticle pattern and not just at the center.  It is an important feature with a less- lethal sight or a machine gun sight where multiple aiming dots are provided for aiming at different ranges.

However, the image of a diffused object illuminated or formed by a laser or so-called coherent light has a speckle appearance.  It is due to the interference of light within the eye.  The size of the speckle is determined by the resolution of the eye. So in dim light where the pupil is dilated, the speckle is small.  In bright sun light where the pupil is constricted, the speckle appears larger.

Most people can ignore the speckle effect as the large ring is used only in close combat.  The speckles have no effect on performance.  The center dot is used in long range shooting and there is no speckle in the dot.   Also, the speckle effect can be reduced by simply turning the sight reticle brighter.

We should note that the reticle appears at a distance and its sharpness is only as good as the eye of the user.  Make sure the eye is properly corrected for distance seeing when using the sight.
