There has been a recent influx of counterfeit optics reaching the U.S. market.  Leupold seems to be the most prevalent of these fakes most likely due to their name recognition.  Other known fakes include Aimpoint, EOTech, Millet, Trijicon and Swarovski.

eBay seems to be the largest source for these fakes.  eBay has also been the source of scams that are now targeting hunters and shooters.  Here are a few links to some additional information.

"Replica" or "Clone" Optics are cheap fakes
MILLETT counterfeit scope
Counterfeit- Leupold Mark 4 scopes and optics
Leupold Scope Counterfeit Warning
SCAM - SWAROVSKI SCOPE.

Here are few additional threads discussing this problem on OpticsTalk.
