I have been looking at angled, 80mm spotting scopes in a price range under $1,000.00.  So far the best that I have found has been the Pentax with ED glass and a 20-60X eyepiece.  This scope has really impressed me as being right up there with some of the higher-end euros.  Unfortuneately I have not been able to do any extensive testing with this scope.  Has anyone been able to really put it through the ringer?  Does anyone else have a suggestion in this power, size, and price range?

I can sell you a demo. ZEISS 85mm off the samplelist for $999.00 (#2262) but it does not come with an eye piece.  A new eye piece would run you $369.99.

We used to carry the Pentax but never sold since they introduced it.  We finally sold our stock on eBay with no reserve and took them out of our catalog.  The Pentax is very nice and compares favorably to Leica, Swarovski and Zeiss.  We compared it to the Zeiss one day for long range resolution by looking at a distant cell phone tower/antenna.  The Zeiss would resolve the individual X cross bar construction and the Pentax would not.  At closer ranges just looking at random targets the spotters seemed to be equal.  In low light the Zeiss was noticeably brighter (85mm).

Another very good spotter to consider would be the Kowa 82mm.
