Hello All, I just found and joined this forum, and I need some assistance if you could help.
I recently bought a Ruger Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger. It has the 7 1/2 inch barrel.
I was looking for a scope for it. I have been looking at the Nikon 2-7 x 28, Burris 2-8 or 3-12 x 32 or a Leupold 2.5-8 x 36. I have other Nikon scopes on Rifles, and no experience with Burris Or Leupold. I am wanting to keep the price down if possible, but I want the quality of good optics and reliability with a good name company.
Also, I have heard that Burris with posi-loc is the best option, but I have also heard that Burris put the posi-loc on there because the scope would otherwise not hold up. Again, it is a .480 Ruger, so I know it will have some recoil, and I need a scope that will handle it.
Also , Burris offers the Ballistic Plex..... Is it worth a look?
Thank You for your help and opinions.
God Bless

Nice gun. I've got a .44 version that I had specially refinished before I even shot it! It's BLACK STAINLESS. Couldn't get that cool grey finish like on your gun...
Anyway, my scope for that handgun is a Leupold M8 2x20. Works for me.
I also have a Remington XP-100R in .223 that I scoped with a Weaver ( see my thread on the 'fisheye' ). I WISH I'D GOTTEN THE BURRIS 3-12 that I was looking at. I saved $100.00 and I'm not happy with the Weaver product.
Take a look at how the scopes mount up on the SRH. They sit back a good bit. On the regular Redhawk, they fit nicely between the sights. That's why I chose the M8 for my SRH...it fits between the sights and is a bit lighter. You may need the extra magnification for your purposes. I was going to get the .454 Casull 9 1/2" and put a red-dot on it, but that Burris 3-12 would've been a good choice for a longer bbl.
I don't know if my ramblings helped, but sometimes just getting an answer on this Forum is 'nice'. It's kinda slow around here! |

I don't have good pix of that .44, but I can show you a little of what it looks like:
Alternating polished and matte blue/black with the polished trigger/triggerguard. Rings are matte. Scope is gloss. Looks pretty good!

Now that is SWEET... I complement you on that handgun. I have the hogue grip for mine , but I have not put it on yet.
And , yes , you are correct. The original posting of this thread was several days ago, at another forum, and I still have not gotten an answer...LOL.
But yes, I like , and need, some extra magnification on my scopes. I am not sure why, but I have never been comfortable with lower magnification scopes. Most of my hunting / shooting is done from 6X and up. Perhaps it is just the comfort level of my eyes, when looking through my glasses. Perhaps it is a little abot the fact that I like to look a buck over very carefully , before I pull the trigger. I am not sure of all of my reasons, or needs, but I have been eying the 3-12 Burris. But then again, most people would tell me I am getting something I don't need.... Thats why I was looking of others more knowledgable than myself.
But yes, just about any answer is better than none...LOL. I might die before I ever get an answer from that thread on a handgun site.
I thought about the 44 mag. but I just could not turn down the deal I got on this one. I hope the .480 is as good as it is supposed to be.
God Bless

The .480 Ruger is supposed to be 'THE' answer to filling the gap between the .44 and .454 with the additional advantage of BIG! the other two just cannot provide. You made a good choice. I doubt the extra bbl. length of the 9.5" will be important to the game...
Look for information on Ruger rings that are offset. They make them for the rifles. Something may fit the SRH, or another format might be available so you can fit the bigger scope on the 7.5" bbl. gun without severe overhang to the rear above the hammer. There's a LOT of good equipment available, it just takes incessant research to find it. Internet. Pix. Google/Images. Try it all before you buy so you don't waste your time or money.
Obviously, you know what you're doing when handgun hunting. I wish you the best in the research and developement. |

Oh, yeah...that's the HOGUE Tamer grip. MUCH better than the regular GP-100/SRH grip! Thanks for the compliments. |

Now that is what I'm talking about. I have not even thought of the idea of comparing the overall length of the gun and the overall length of the scope. The 7 1/2 inch barrel gives the SRH roughly a 14 inch OAL. I guess a scope less than that might be a good thing...LOL.
Thanks for all your help and the quick replys. And as I said, I did not pick the gun as much as it picked me. I got it for 400.00 even and I couldn't pass it up. But my wife might think otherwise.... If she only knew about the necessities of men...............LOL. |

Let her shoot it --- then she'll understand!
Keep on the project and post about it when you make some headway on it. |

scope handgun questions don't get asked because it's always the same one. which over powered variable do i use. unless your shooting something like a T/C or xp with a harris bipod or front bag it is extremely difficult to hold the gun on anything stonger than 4. sight refinements are made with small movements of the wrist. using the support to pivot the gun. if not availabe the gun must be shot from a locked wrist position which is difficult to do on high power. because the gun is only good for 4 in. groups at 100 , high powers are no good here either.

Well, I hope my posting did not bother or annoy anyone. But I asked it because, 1) I use the higher magnifications to get a good look at the animal. 2) I will be hunting from an elevated platform, with a stable rest. So what others can and can not do does not interest me. I just asked the questions hoping someone was kind enough to give a reliable answer concerning the quality and individual aspects of the different scopes.
Thank You and God Bless.

not a lot of hundgun hunters here, stick around and fill in the void. as far as the quality -- most hobby scopes in the same price class are pretty much the same. have used the burris and leo on .221 fireball, 223, 7mm TCUm, 7/30 waters and 35 rem, 44 mag Mark II rugers, S$W 41s, tauraus 22 hornet, SRH 44 and 454s and prefer the leo 2x as the edges are not as fuzzy. variable are pretty useless past 4x even for observations, as the eye box is too small. the leo 2x fits the ruger the best with tleast over hang
22 hornet 35 gr 2800 fps, notice how far forward the mount must be to stop overhang

I also have a SRH in 480 Ruger. It has a Bushnell 3200 2-6x32 with their FireFly reticle mounted on what I think is a Weigand mount. I find it to be very comfortable out to 100 yards. I have had excellent service from this series of scopes. I have them mounted on several FA 454's, a FA 475, a FA 500 Wyoming Express and a T/C Encore 308. Excellent service from them and most important - ample and constant eye relief. My only real fuss, and it is with ALL handgun scopes - light transmission. I really hate to give up at least five minutes to the rifle guys
