I am looking at purchashing the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 based on price and reputation. Does anyone have any experience with this scope? It will be mounted on my 22-250 and used primarily for varmit and target practice at the range. Any recommendations?

as long as the targets are not bigger, moving targets, liek coyote, and foxes, the 6-18 will be fine, and the nikon buckmaster scope is a great scope for the money. but if you will be shooting coyote/foxes, you might want something more like a 4x on the low end.

The Buckmaster is one of the best values in scopes today.  It has finger adjustable target knobs, adjustable objective, sun shade and multi coated lenses.

Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40.....$329.95

Also consider these;

Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40....$389.95

Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 Ballistic Plex w/ FREE 12-24x50 spotting scope......$336.99

Weaver V16 4-16x42.....$289.95

Weaver V-24 6-24x42.....$329.95

A 4-16 is an excellent "do everything" power range.

As luck goes it is not physically possible to have a 4-16X in a 1 inch tube> If this is a 30 mm tube yes. Because no manufactering standards exist, it is possible for a manufacturer to "fudge" the figures. This scope if given a 10% leeway would probably be closer to 5-15X. This does not mean it is any less of a good deal or will work for the results. Thus the term 4-16X ( and most other numerical designations for scopes) become nouns belonging to the name of the scope signifing nothing. They lose their adjectal description in quantification of the descriptive variable nature of the scope's power.

Why is it not physically possible to have a 4x erector in a one inch scope yet it is in a 30mm scope?

As the erector "builds" the picture the collminated rays hit the side of the tube in a 1 inch and not in the 30mm which is just large enough to allow the rays into the last set of lenses. If you think parallex is misunderstood, this one has everybody fooled. Go to Leo web site (just to pick an example) where they will give you the "real" magnification. Why do you think Leo started coming out with all that 3.5X10 stuff years ago if they hadn't been called to account (and other strange multiples thereof)? Why not a 6.27X36.78. Because consumers want shorter scopes it is necessary to increase the first lenses size in order to get the same amount of light as a longer tube. In this same regard it is only possible to have a 30 mm tube with a 4 multiple. or say a 3X12. Remember again that a 10% error is allowed in the manufacturing as this means that in any statistical sample the scopes would proably by 3.33 to 11.7. If the quality control of the company was high, as in the better brands, only those scopes tested with say 3.1 to 11.9 would be allowed into the distribution chain while the rest would be redirected to off shore sales under the guise of a different scope name. Yes it is possible to set up the Null hypothesis to predict, select and direct this in production management with the consumer being the wiser. Why? Because no Bureau of Standards exist such as say Pharmaceuticals which require very strict manufacturing before public release.

I know the companies that do not have a 4x 1" erectors claim it can not be done but the companies that do have a 4x 1" erector claim it is possible.  Bushnell's specs claim to not be "fudged" and accurate so we take them for their word.  All of the Elite 4200 scopes are as advertised and welcomed to be tested for verification according to Bushnell.  There is no secret on how scopes magnify, the erector tube simply moves a lens forward and backward inside the scope.  The further is moves the greater the magnification (kinda like a handheld magnifying glass).  The erector tube has a slot in it that wraps around the tube in a spiral fashion to facilitate the moving of the lens.  A 30mm tube does this easier because the erector tube is larger in diameter making it also larger in circumference, so the slot covers more surface area and is able to move the lens further with the same rotation of the power selector.  If you want a one inch tube scope with a smaller erector tube to move the lens further you simply use a longer erector tube so that the spiral slot can be stretched.  This is the reason that the Elite 4200 scopes are so long (especially in the tube area).

I concur. The Buckmaster is priced WAY below where it should be, IMHO.

This scope will hold it's own with a lot of more expensive scopes. I had one on a .300 RUM...ZERO shifts in POI.

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.
