I have noticed that a lot of you guys are into magnum recoil punishment.  Cory appears to have made it a way of life. I am just curious as to why?  I go out of my way to avoid anything with magnum in the title, hence why I have calibers like the .35 Whelen.  I do own one magnum, a .375 H&H and that is only because I figured if I bought the gun it would force me to go after a Cape Buffalo.  At any rate, a .270, .308. and a .30-06 are more than adequate for most anything in N.America or any other continent.  I do not like the recoil or muzzle blast that are associated with magnums.  I kill'em just as dead with more moderate velocities and less meat damage.  Standard calibers are just as effective as magnums out to the ranges that most hunters should be shooting.  Please explain to me why otherwise normal, church going people, engage in these S&M gun practices.

Ranburr, why does Ferrari build the ENZO, Porsche build the GT2, Kawasaki the 10R ad so and so on. Because American's have lust for power, speed and greed. I don't know why they feel the need for these ridiculous powerhouses. On a positive note, I have seen some recent articles that go to th heart of your point. Did you see the latest creation by Lazzeroni? It is still being tested, but  it has been dubbed the Battlestar. A cartridge that will launch a 30 cal. 180 gr. bullet at approx. 4000 fps. The barrel will probably never last long enough for it's first cleaning!!!!

Another often overlooked pit fall of excessive speed is the "overstablization" of the projectile... Quite often the barrel twist in a rifle chambered for 308 win will have the same twist as a rifle chambered for a 30-378 ... that means that the 30-378's projectile is spinning far too rapidly and hense is then rotating around the axis of it's EXCENTRICITY rather than around the axis of the bores CONCENTRICITY. This creates a "wobble" of the bullet for the first part (out to about 80yds or so)of its flight untill it slows down to a stable speed. If you apply "vector science" to this situation it is easy to see why the sweetest velocity for a given bullet (in terms of accuracy) is usually much less than the velocities the super mags can generate.

And in terms of killing power, most PH's will tell you that a bullet with a large frontal meplant moving at a moderate speed kills a bunch quicker than a smaller sharply pointed bullet moving at a much faster speed .... even tho their muzzel energies may be very similar.

We push bullets faster primarily to flatten their trajectories and to increase down range energy, but when we exceed the "sweet spot" velocity wise, we often sacrifice accuracy. If you add to that the human factor that we call the "flichies" caused by previous shoulder abuse it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why so many "big ones" get away.

hmmmm.... its jsut one of those things.... cant really explain it, i would be just as happy hunting deer with a 243......now that gets me to thinking, i dont have one of them yet. maybe a 700 cdl in 7mm-08 would be the perfect deer slayer. that 300 ultra mag doesnt tear deer up as long as you get them at a minimum of 300 yards, but within that, there goes your meat. i guess i bought it because i wanted that gun, and its the most bueatiful gun ive seen yet, and i figured i was going to try not to use it all that much, so hey, why not the 300 utlra mag.

Knewt brings up a valid point about with regards to the 30-378, which I believe has a following for the boys doing doing 1000 yard work for target shooting. I believe, and I could be wrong, that the large capacity rounds are often used with bullet weights of 220-240 gr weights. I know I read somewhere with regards to Lazzeroni's big boys that they were very often more accurate at 200-300 yards as the bullets began to stabilize. I sure Dale can shed more light on these topics than I could. As far as the redneckbmxer is concerned, everyone has a different level of tolerable recoil ( Pain ) and if he can handle these rounds with proficiency than be my guest, so long as you are not using them as a substitute for marksmanship. His choice of the Remington 700 CDL is a good one, as if I had the cash flow, it would be on my short list of new guns to buy. On a final note, it seems like we are all pretty much in agreement on the level of power to cleanly take a 120-160 lb whitetail. I remember when I showed up in camp in Sask., Canada on my first whitetail hunt up North with my 280 Ack Imp during the un-casing of guns and the hunters in camp had nothing less than 300 WM's. They looked at me as if I were from another planet. Actually one gentleman had a 7mm Remington Mag and I told him that the Ackley will do everything his 7 Mag would do and the discussion went from there. I wished the outfitter had a chronograph, but up there your luck to find a stable bench to shoot from. I could see that our friendly discussion was going nowhere so I let it go. I will say that the deer up there are almost double the body weight and then some. But they are still thin skinned game. why argue with a man who fires less than 20 rounds of ammo a year!!!

P.S. Cory when you get your 700 CDL I'd like some feedback if you don't mind. That is one on Remington's nicest gun's to date. Have you ever seen the 700 APR from the Custom Shop? I have one and not only is a beauty, it shoots like a house on fire!!! Talk to ya soon.

Cory, I know this will sound crazy to you, but, the 700 CDL will be available in 280 Remington. I can assure you that this is a great whitetail cartridge. Or you could do one of two things if your 280 does not live up to your expectations. 1. Leave it alone and use it for plinking. 2. Have it re-chambered for 7mm Ultra Mag!!!!

Probably the most popular gun for shooting elk by the local boys around here and in Wyo. is the 25-06. Why? outstand bullet selection(not necessary in the 25s)-Barnes lives in American Fork and low recoil. One of the best and still biggest Grizzles taken was with a 7X57 using screw turned Nosler partitions (some of their first) by Ike of Ikes Gunshop in Idaho Falls,
