pyro,

Some rifle manufacturers intentionally have a pressure pad in the forend to help stabilize the action bedding and dampen barrel vibrations.  Sometimes these pressure pads help improve accuracy, sometimes they are a hindrance.  The problem is wood, even when sealed, is not always 100% stable, and if the stock swells or warps any, the amount of pressure on the barrel changes, which makes for inconsistent POI & accuracy.  The same is true if you change the torque on the action screws, which then changes the amount of pressure against the barrel.  I personally prefer a free floating barrel, because at least POI remains more consistent.  Keep in mind though, if you sand out the pressure point, you will generally also need to bed the action so that it doesn't shift in the stock during firing.

i spent another 15 min sanding on it this afternoon and it didnt take much and the dollar bill just slides by i dont know if i will need to bed the action or not because i didnt remove much, other than that one small spot the rest of the barrel was floating. i guess i will see when i get to finally shoot it.

well i am back and i knew there was a reason why i dont shoot factory ammo much, poor groupings. the .280 is a sweet shooter less recoil than the 30-06 for sure, it took me about 5 five shots to get the scope into an area where i felt comfortable with shooting a 5 shot group for accuracy i was under 2 inches at  100 with 5 shots so i have a lot of room for improvement and i am excited to see what she will do with my loads.

pyro6999, how is the 280 shooting now that you have had a chance to work up some more handloads?  I have the same rifle in a 220 Swift and it is a tacke driver.  Ruger makes a great rifle at a great price.  The trigger on mine is fine for my purposes.  As usual,  I did not see spending upwards 100 dollars on improving the trigger when I did not think it would improve my accuracy.  1 inch groups or less is as good as 0.5 inch groups at 100 yards as someone quotes on one of the other site, who is an ex-military sniper and as far as I am concerned, that is good enough for my reasonable shooting capabilities.  I would rate myself as very good, but not an expert.
