I am looking at purchasing either a Leupold VX-III 8.5 - 25 x 50mm or a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 x 40mm.  It will be going an a Savage .308 model 10FP "Law Enforcement Sniper Issue" to replace the Burris FFII 3.5-12x that it came with. I like the Burris but I want to put it on my hunting rifle and get something more powerful for the .308.  I don't know enough about the two to decide. Clarity? Durability?

As far as the Leupold goes... There are two 8.5x25's w/ the varmint reticle. One is 14.5" / 21oz. for$890, the other is 14.3" / 16 oz. for $680.  Why the big price difference and is it worth it?

Thanks...

what will you be using this rifle for. 8.5-25 is a little powerful on the lower end for generel use i would get the bushnell, and never look back.

If I just bought that stick, I would put a 16X SS on it.

With anything over 20X your going to get some substantial mirage. Unless you plan on plugging small furry critters at extended range, my opinion is that your a bit high on the magnification.  I have some scopes that will magnify 20x and I never turn them past 14-16x for killing paper. Many people shoot worse with such high magnification.

I'm not here to tell you what you want, just throwing that in.

I have the 4200 6-24x40 and I really like it, but I like the 4200 4-16x50 much much better.

Here is my issue with the  4200 6-24x40:  You have a heavy barrel .308 effective past 1000yrds or out way past what most people care to ever shoot.  With the 6-24x40, you have a measily 26" of adjustment range.  http://www.bushnell.com/products/riflescopes/specs/42-6242m. html

Do you want to put a whopping 24-power scope on a rifle where your elevation is maxed at only 500yrds?

Also, get a mental image of how long the tube is on the 6-24x.

There were allot of good recommendations.  The 4200's have awesome glass in them, thats for sure. However, with that stick, I would want enough clicks to atleast get to 700yrds. The 4-16x50 will do that for ya.  Given your two choices I would be forced to the Loopy for the lack of adjustment range in the 4200 6-24.
