I intend on getting one of these soon and would like to know if anybody else here has a pair of the 8x42s and what their impressions are? While I believe in getting the best I can't afford, this one really has me bleeding, so I guess i'm just looking for a little reassurance

When I was in the market it came down to the Geovid, Ultravid and Zeiss FL; the resolution and color in the "straight" binocular products were better.

Personally, in my opinion they are about the best glass on the planet, and hey, you get a free laser range finder in the deal!

Here they are sitting on my bench at a "rat" shoot in Bend Oregon.

Just got mine this evening, unfortunately it's too dark to do any testing today. They're a lot smaller and lighter than I expected, even having read the specs, and the build quality seems pretty bullet proof.

Got time to do a more thorough testing today. Compared them side by side with my 7x30 SLCs, they were pretty close but seemed slightly sharper and clearer (though that could be the extra 1x magnification). Slower to focus than the SLCs, though that doesn't bother me too much (love that about the Swaros, focus at about 100 yards and everything is in focus from that to the limit of vision). I didn't do a twilight comparison as that wouldn't be fair on the wee Swaros. Tested them on their own though and I had no trouble making out details long after I would have taken a shot. Very comfortable in the hands, and not a strain on the neck as they come with a pretty beefy strap.

They are a pleasure to rangefind with, much easier to hold steady than a compact rf, and will consistently return readings up to their stated range, which can't be said for my Leupold RXII. Ranged the rocks on the mountain at up to 1302 yards with the sun directly over the mountain. In the same conditions the RXII can have difficulty returning ranges over 350 yards. Ranging was lightning quick by comparison also.

In summary, they have exceeded my expectations so far and I couldn't be happier with them. It's a lot of cash to be dropping but I do think they are worth it.

You will love them!  In my humble opinion, Leica glass is the clearest going in the binocular department.  I used to own a 10x50 SLC Swarovski and when compared to my Leica Geovid 8x40, I thought the Leica's seemed much clearer.  Some may argue that point but you have to remember; the Geovids don't have the extra glass coating that other binoculars have due to the lazer rangefinder.  My only problem, if it really is one, is that I want/need a higher magnification and am considering moving up to the 10x42 or even the 15x56 models!  I know that on my annual elk pilgrimage to Idaho every fall, if I set my leica's down for a second, someone with a lesser brand picks them up and then the "holy shi_ts" and the "wow's" start coming!  Most folks who look through them swear they are a higher magnification than they really are!  You will never go wrong buying Leica optics!
