This is my third eyepiece from Celestron for their Ultima 100 scope that has had tiny black specks appear in the eyepiece. It seems they have some issue with the plant where these things are manufactured.
The first Ultima 100 I bought off Celestron on Amazon back in August 2020. A few months after purchasing I noticed black flecks inside the eyepiece. It was too late to send it back to Amazon, so I took it to an optics repair shop here in Vancouver and was told it was a bit of reflective coating that had come loose. The guy cleaned it, then more specks appeared a week later. I contacted Celestron and they agreed to replace the scope, which took six months due to Covid supply problems.
Then two months ago black specks appeared on the replacement eyepiece. I contacted Celestron and they agreed to replace this eyepiece. So the new eyepiece arrives in small box, the corner of which is badly crunched by UPS, and lo-and-behold, another black speck!
A part of me wants to swear never to buy another Celestron product but my search on the internet found dozens of similar complaints about dreaded black specs in scope eyepiece lenses.
Frustrating. Mine isn’t a high end scope, but it isn’t a toy either.

Welcome and sorry to hear about those eyepiece issues Mark. Can be very frustrating but I am sorry to say this is not an uncommon issue even with higher end optics’s like Televue, Nagler, etc. Have you tried to dislodge the flecks to the side by tapping against your palm?

Can try to get replaced through Celestron again. Good luck with it.

God save the Empire!

A Google search found a dozen posts on different forums for this problem and each one with a different brand. Many people who responded to these posts with the same speck problem said they just lived with it. That seems a bit crazy to me, even for a $300-$500 scope, never mind a +$1000 ED glass scope.

Yes. No luck.
At least Celestron has been good about replacement, though now they want me to send back both defective eyepieces so they can inspect them, which means no scope for possibly a couple of months 😕.
