Hey all, I'm new here, just getting into different kinds of optics a bit.  I have experience in digital photography and understand the construction of optics generally.  I just bought a pair of Upland Optics 10x42 just to keep with me in the car, on the boat, etc.  I've had a few "lesser" pairs of binoculars before, and all I've had this issue with.

It seems that I need to keep the binoculars "closed" basically all the way, meaning I need to keep the barrels pushed together as far as they will go in order to have one clean sight picture.  If I open them at all so they are more comfortable to use and more in line with my eyes, the sight pictures separate and I don't get one clean image.  Maybe this is normal?  It just makes them much less comfortable to use because the barrels are pressed together on the bridge of my nose.

If this is normal, fine, but I can't tell if I'm doing something wrong, or there is an issue I don't know about...  Any guidance would be great.  Thanks!

If you have had this issue with all the binos you’ve owned it sounds like you have a very narrow interpupillary distance. As I understand it the hinge adjustment is there to line up your pupils as close to the centre of the oculars as possible to form a single image. If you wear glasses this has probably been checked by your optician and you could verify with them.

Hi there, this is good information. I have a Pentax binoculars that doesn’t bend. The hinges are stuck. I’m wondering if I could place some drops of lubricant on the hinges. I can also pry open a cover that I think there is a screw underneath. I’d like to post a photo. How do I post a photo of the cover? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Careful with prying. I would try a penetrating lubricant first, get it to soak in if you cab
Was sure I had a point when I started this post...

Thank you. I’ll place 2-3 drops of lubricant first and let it soak overnight. If not happens I’ll pry carefully. Thank you!
