Although it doesn’t seem to have been reported on this forum, back on 15th January 2021 Swarovski Optik announced three products:
• CL Pocket binocular upgrade

• EL Range TA binocular, and

• dS Gen II rangefinder telescopic sight

Full details can be found on Swarovski’s website. On the initial screen:

• click on the Products button on the top right hand side, and follow the screen flow, and

• for additional information, click on the Come Closer (?) button on the top left hand side

With the latter: choose the Service option; then My Service; then the Products icon, and; then keep going!

For an introduction . . .

CL Pocket Upgrade

The changes to the 8x25 and 10x25 CL Pocket models are minor, primarily relating to the detailing of the rubber armour and the contouring of the bridge

As indicated in the CL’s pamphlet:

‘The changes made relate to design and accessories, with no differences between the optical parameters of the CL Pocket binoculars range, introduced in September 2013’

EL Range TA

This is the first major revision of the EL Range since its introduction in 2001 (the FieldPro update of 2014, changed various cosmetic details along with the way that the neck strap

and objective covers are attached)

It brings the Swarovski model broadly into line with the capabilities of the 3rd generation Leica Geovid of 2013 (the Perger prism version), and the 2nd gen Zeiss Victory of 2018

In terms of primary optics, the new Range incorporates both a flat field of view and a wider field of view

The nominal maximum RF distance has been extended from 1,375 to 2,000 m (1,500 yd to 2,200 yd). And the minimum distance is now 10 rather than 30 m (11 rather than 33 yd),

so of interest to bow hunters

The Range is now Bluetooth enabled to allow the uploading of ballistic information. And temperature and barometric sensors have been added to better calculate holdover

A novel feature is the Tracking Assistant aka TA. It provides the ability to track to the last of 3 locations measured

This is done by:

• providing a back bearing to the location from which the unit took the measurement, and;

• then providing the distance and direction (in the form of an an arc) to the location from which the reading was obtained

The unit includes an onboard compass to assist in this

dS Gen II Sight

The Gen II version gives more options as to what is displayed in the eyepiece, including: the choice of 6 different electronic reticles, and; the choice of more parameters and their location

There are also more reticle illumination options, and a cant indicator has been added

The unit also has a more compact battery turret and redesigned controls on the eyepiece cover

The existence of a Bluetooth enabled binocular and sight raises an interesting possibility in terms of further integration

With suitable enhancement, an RF binocular could directly communicate the point of aim information to a sight:

a) As is now the case, the binocular would perform the ranging and POA calculations, and

b) When chosen by the user, it would send the information to the sight, which would then display the corrected POA

As the RF hardware would not be needed in the sight, a much simplified, size reduced (especially in body diameter) and cost reduced version would be possible

For much hunting, the above would allow the traditional and preferred sequence i.e. search with the advantage of a hand held binocular device to locate and appraise a potential target,

and determine the range, and; when a decision to shoot is made, then use the sight to aim at the target

Additionally, the RF binocular functions could be incorporated into an RF enabled spotting scope - so also the possibly of a 'dSTR' telescope?
