Serious inspiration hit me this year.  I just finished cooking the shiitake mushroom stuffing and it is beyond doubt the best I've ever made.
I've not baked a cake since 1994, but decided this year to try to recreate my Grandmother's chocolate cake... my sister has tried for years and failed...so, I just iced the cake and so far everything is looking just like what Grandma used to make... taste of the icing is perfect, but I have to wait at least two hours to see if I've replicated the consistency... thin, crispy icing.  If this turns out, I will have accomplished a TRUE "bucket list" item.  It's like suddenly I just knew what to do... after all these years.
If she was guiding me, I have only one more request of her... Grandma, teach me how to make your fried chicken...
If this cake turns out right, it will be a true work of magic... none of my aunts, uncles, cousins, sister have ever been able to make that cake.
All I have left to do now is put everything in the oven for warming tomorrow...
I always enjoy the "Christmas Season", but this year has been magical.
May the entire world be blessed with the beauty and awe of Christmas.  Fear not... for God is with us...

From top to bottom, left to right:
Chocolate cake, cranberry/orange w/Amaretto sauce bread pudding (chocolate cake served with raspberries and creme fraiche)
cranberry/wild cherry relish, parsnip vichyssoise, spiced butternut squash
yeast rolls, roasted pork loin stuffed with shiitake/chanterelle/porcini wild mushroom dressing
The snow peas were still cooking, one pork loin was left out, most of the vichyssoise still in the cooking pot and the Belle Meade Plantation Chardonnay and French Chateau LeGrange Bordeaux were chilling.

Overall, went well.  We had to do a couple hour "time out" between dinner and desert/s

That looks like a wonderful meal Dan, and a lot of work, or fun, to prepare. Thoughtful gifts from your wife - lucky man!

You mean the prize goose hanging in the butcher's window as big as me?
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.
